As the title says, I seem to always have bad races whenever I taper and I've noticed that for all of my good races I didn't taper at all. For example, my half marathon PR was at the end of a 110 mile week and I ran 12 miles the day before. I ran a few other races and PRs the same way. I also felt very strong in these races. However, anytime I've tried doing a proper taper I seem to run worse/not feel as strong. I've run a few decent halfs off a taper but they felt harder than my PR race. I had a few shorter races I tapered for that were just terrible - legs were flat and I just redlined way too early in the race. The big problem I notice is that when I taper my heart rate gets higher on runs and I feel stale/less fit. I don't think I'm overdoing the taper either. Usually the week before the race I will cut back in mileage a bit and then a bit more on race week and don't really start cutting back until the few days before the race. Not sure why this happens. I thought tapers usually make you faster on race day, but it only seems to do the opposite for me. Does it just mess with my system too much and I'm better off not tapering at all? Is anyone else the same way? would like to know your thoughts.
