20 days out - 1:36:39 HM at altitude (5500'-6000' range)
14 days out - 1:10:26 10-mile at altitude
6 days out - 20:41 5K at altitude
Marathon - 2:59:00 at sea level
I'm assuming that 5k was not run all out and was just a tune up, yes?
I'm 2/2 on terrible tune up races heading into marathon
10/14/18 - 1:25:53 HM
11/11/18 - 2:47:14 M
10/9/21 - 1:05:58 10M
11/21/21 - 2:43:41 M
There have been world class marathoners who seemed to specialize at this.
Thank you.
After your “terrible tune up races” what allowed you to know, that despite these underperformances, you could realistically target the faster marathon paces?
Define terrible. If I'm running a half < 2 months from a goal marathon I'm not going in expecting to PR. If you're in heavy marathon training, you can probably muster 13.1 @ GMP on any given weekend. You probably feel like you can run a few miles faster at that pace but not any faster. Then there's also weather + if you're running on a challenging course or not. Sometimes the goalposts move & a good result at a half marathon isn't what you'd be able to do in 40 degrees with no wind on a pancake flat course.
When I ran my marathon PR I ran a half in gross weather conditions on a tough course 6 weeks out. I averaged 5s/mile slower in my marathon, and that was with a 3min positive split. I was averaging about the same pace, if not a little faster, through 35k.
No worries Mantz, you’ll be fine in Boston.
Yes.
Ran a 1:28 half in October of 2019
turned around and ran a 2:57 full in January of 2020
Though the 1:28 was ran without vaporflys. I did in fact run slower with vaporflys when I did a half in September of 2019 that was like 1:35.
1:14 half, 4 weeks later 2:25 full.
You've got two months to dial it in, man. Keep plugging away. You'll be fine.
Well the future was unknown and in both cases my expectation and confidence wavered. In 2018 I had a great spring and summer, I knew I had the mileage behind me, I knew my workouts were going well and the long runs were there. So I went out with the goal of 2:45 and held on fairly successfully. In 2021 the only positive was my higher mileage, up until about 6 weeks out every other indicator suggested I wasn't going under 2:50. Everything started to come together (how I felt, workouts) around then and I once again aimed for 2:45 with a bit more success. There were many days I had where I felt terrible or confidence was low and I had to 'trust the process'.
RIP: D3 All-American Frank Csorba - who ran 13:56 in March - dead
RENATO can you talk about the preparation of Emile Cairess 2:06
