Speed endurance. This will make you better at holding a high pace for an extended period of time.
A lot of 800/milers do that kind of workout.
Yeah that’s not what speed endurance is, however 20x200 is a classic early season workout for a lot of milers. A John cook staple, and I’d say he did alright.
OP is upset that he isn’t allowed to run 12 x 200 @ 25 like a high school hero. He felt constrained and confused by this workout. It also lasted far beyond what his short attention span could handle.
If you don’t trust your coach, then you should transfer or quit.

You sir, have no idea what you are talking about...
maybe he does, maybe he doesn't, but i did a similar workout often--6x200/100 jog; 6x250/150jog; 6x200/100 jog; 6x250/150jog; 6x200/100 jog; 6x250/150jog; 400 jog between each set, so a total of 36 reps. no determined pace--he used iglói-influenced terms like good-speed and good-swing--but i'd guess sub-30; this was a staple workout for the pro-level santa monica track club 800/1500 runners in the 80s/90s. joe douglas would call it speed-stamina, which i couldn't tell you if this is some technical term with a clear definition beyond the obvious. it worked out pretty well for me, though...
See the second post in this thread. Apparently this workout is more popular than you thought. By the way, 'coach made you' do it? Did you agree to be coached by him/her? If not, how were you even in communication with him/her?

as a part of this dark age i agree. uninformed american distance runners unfortunately hadn't taken the alsal plunge into epo/T-cream/thyroid med/TUE enlightenment...
