IF I were Rojo I would either ban all of you for a day for being stupid or I would ban myself for a day for asking potentially stupid people if they are indeed stupid?
After Jerry was hired he only named four assistant coaches - the NCAA allows for 6 total between the head coach and 5 assistants. He brought on Shalane for distance, Brian Blutreich for throws, and kept Curtis for sprints, and Seth Hensen for jumps, then added couple of ops people. So he never hired a 6th and final paid coach. I was told the reason was they overspent on salary for his assistants so they couldn’t hire anyone until the new year. Now that we are entering 2023, admin approved the addition of the final Coach.
Another note - people are making a big deal about the position only bringing in 75K. Oregon assistants all get a generous stipend from Nike to supplement their salary, plus generous performance bonuses. So Solinsky will be just fine financially.
Why do people keep saying this position only pays 75k? That was never in the job posting that I saw.
I mean....how much do you guys think assistant college track coaches make? Coaching track is not something you do for the money outside of P5. You can search around and find salaries.
I put this in the original Solinsky thread but never got a response. Since we are about to record this week's pod, I thought I'd start a new thread to hopefully get a response.
I'm curious as to why there was an opening at Oregon in December.
Can someone tell me who previously had the job Solinsky got at Oregon previously? Did someone leave mid-year? Or did Jerry never fill those roll way back when he was hired?
I'll close this thread when we get an answer (and will post it in the original thread) as I don't like multiple threads on the same topic
Prior to this hire they only had 5 paid coaches on staff (NCAA allows 6).
Now their staff is structured as follows:
3 distance coaches
1 sprint/hurdles/relays coach (retained from previous staff)
1 throws coach
1 coach for combined events and jumps (retained from previous staff)
So basically they traded Thomas and Lehman Winters for Flanagan and Solinsky. If Robert Johnson had any hands-on coaching responsibilities, those responsibilities will be taken up by the retained sprints and jumps coaches.
It is safe to assume that sprint and jump event groups are going to become A LOT smaller.
3) I knew the answer would be instant versus harrasing people at Oregon at 6:30 am.
Rojo, your post asking this question on the Solinsky to Oregon thread was submitted at 10:35 pm EST last night. That’s 7:35 pm Pacific time. Why not send a quick text to your Oregon contacts at that time?

A better question is how can you leave U of F now, right before indoor track season begins?

Dude even coached in the NCAA and still has a mediocre understanding of how NCAA athletics works.
Sounds right about the 6 coaches but with NIL as a way to essentially eliminate the schoalrship cap, it seems that a program like Oregon can just pay Solinsky from Nike as a professional coach and have him volunteer coach at Oregon thereby completly negating the cap.

When did his contract expire?
I feel bad for Valby.
I thought most coaches were on year to year contracts. Sort of surprised he was able to leave. Granted my sample size is small and it might just be there aren't a ton of job openings in Jan...

I'm sure he was on a year or even potentially multi year contract (not sure if the multi year contracts are common for assistant coaches at the P5 level), but he would have broken his contract I'm sure to take the Oregon job.
