Nick Plant won the ACC 800m title in 1:47.41. Ran 1:47.18 in his prelim heat. Hopefully bigger and better things are on the horizon for the Canfield grad.
Nathan Mountain won the ACC 3000m steeplechase title in 8:32. He also ran the 5000m and finished 11th with a time of 14:12.
On the women's side, Rachel Butler of Dublin Jerome was 6th in the Big 12 10000 final on Friday to earn all-Big 12 status. She is running at West Virginia as a grad transfer. Conditions were not the best with temps and winds. Butler ran 35:19 and has a season PR of 33;40 from the Stanford Invitational. Today she runs the 5000 and has a season best of 16:08 from the Penn Relays. She would probably like to get under 16 or at least run a time fast enough to qualify for the East Regional.
That is impressive for someone that never ran competitively until switching from soccer to cross country & track in her senior year at Xavier about 1 1/2 years ago. She had to make the switch due to injuries and concussions. She did not run cross country at WVU this past fall due to injuries and I have no idea if she still has eligibility remaining.
Grace Hartman of Oakwood has had a good freshman season at NC State. On Thursday she ran 4:15.73 in the ACC semifinal of the 1500 to qualify for the final. The final was a slow-paced event with high temps and she ran 4:22 for 8th place. She was 10th in 5000 final with a time of 16:24 and has a season PR of 15:49. She should be in contention for a top 7 spot on the Wolfpack cross team this coming fall.
Why is Elliott Cook of Dublin Jerome is running unattached or redshirting this season at Oregon? There is a thread hear about how many Oregon guys are redshirting this season but I didn't read it. Cook has good potential with a 3:55 mile PR and ran decently in cross last year. Caleb Brown of Shelby is also redshirting at Oregon this season.
Update any other Ohioans and how they're doing collegiately.
Just a follow up on Plant and Mountain.
Both of them won the East Region NCAA D1 and advance to Nationals, mountain in the steeplechase and Plant in the 800m
Great job guys, keeping Ohio distance running on the map
Gabelman looked gassed in that 800m. No matter, he should run a great anchor and a good 1600m this weekend.
I will go out on a limb now and say Ackley gets titles in both the 1600m and 3200m.
Ackley-Dyer-Gabelman-Noah Johnson will be a good top four. All of them will be close to each other in the end.
I wonder when the last time someone won the 1600 and 3200 in D1? Bockenstette? I think you’re right though unless someone really challenges him in the 1600, if he can still run 9:04 then yeah I don’t see him not winning the 3200.

Bockenstette sounds like a good guess. It has been awhile since someone has pulled off that top double in D1 boys. I think it's time for it to happen again.
I just checked: the most recent almost was Dustin Horter in 2018 with a 1st in the 1600m with 4:06.96 and then a 3rd in the 3200m with a 9:05.88.
The actual last time? Indeed, it was Doug Bockenstette back in 1994 (damn, I didn't realize it was that long ago. I also didn't realize the 1600m-3200m double win is that rare.): 4:10.14 and 9:07.50.
More guys have won the 1600m-800m double in the past 20 years.

Ackley has a good chance at pulling of the 16/32 double but it is a difficult task. Historically the temps the weekend of the state meet are pretty hot and that makes it even more difficult. Iirc, the year that Horter attempted the double it may have been around 90°.

At Hilliard Darby in 2021 even Nathan Mountain couldn’t do it. I was there and it was 92 most of the afternoon. He ran 4:06/9:23.
I am wondering how much of a factor running a leg on the 4x800 will be for these guys on day two.
Looking back at those aforementioned performances, Bockenstette's efforts in '94 seem even more Herculean: he ran the anchor on LaSalle's fourth-place finishing team (7:53.56) and then completed the 1600m-3200m sweep on day two.
Mountain also ran the anchor in 2021 and wow, they finished with a very un-St. Xesque performance of 8:11.08 (16th place). No matter, he crushed it on day two with that 4:06.
Lakota East didn't have a 4x800 in Columbus in 2018, so Horter was ready to roll on Saturday, as will be the case with Ackley.
I presume Ricchiuti, Radraraju, Rice, Trapp, Ntwali, Guererra, and Eli Ilg will all run legs on their 4x800 teams. In the end (how much) will that take away from their 3200m performance on Saturday?
I am eager to see how well Rice does in his tripling efforts. GlenOak's 4x800 could get on the podium and he could podium in the 1600m. How well will he defend his 3200m title?
