A lot of posters are former runners that peaked decades ago in college. LRC has just replaced the neighborhood tavern where such guys would get drunk, brag about a race from 30 years ago, and then paint all current runners as soft and not nearly as good as his generation. A bunch of Uncle Rico types.

Some people like to argue. I think it would maybe be a good move to mark certain threads to be more friendly because sometimes the volatility seeps into the rest of letsrun and I can imagine people not liking it.
Hot take but the difference is we can compare times. See how much faster high schoolers and collegiates are today... We're still hobby joggers but if we had the knowledge available today we would have been so much faster.
-self selection bias (think of some of the mad posters you know, they found this place as somewhere they we can shout their crazy ideas to anyone anytime so they stayed here)
Among those who are 'normal', internet interactions are different and it makes being rude and an ass way easier.
Plus, maybe the average *post* is bad, but this is bc crazy posters post so much they have the power of "turning the balance". And the average *poster* is sort of ok..
Last but not least I don't think the rojos have good incentives. Overall traffic is their main thing; quality of the threads and discussions are barely a mean towards that. So the "4chanization" of lrc is not prevented.
Here's what I'm going with. I found this place secondhand through looking up AJ Acosta 's results in the Carlsbad 5000 when he ran it as an elite. And here was this thread going after AJ being a substitute teacher. And I read it and there were vile comments made about AJ. Now I'm going to clarify too. I was against AJ after the Puskedra incident. But to see AJ still come in at 14:57 with a bum hamstring and a bit disheveled ...i bought in.
But i saw the comments about AJ, and i had to weigh in. Letsrun made their bed with me. I don't see them as good people. Cash Grady goes out on trails with RSV? How can I trust any of you?
I agree that it’s actually just a handful of bad apples. The majority of users I’ve interacted with on this website are really helpful and kind people.
Just an unfortunate handful of people here that perceive themselves as very intellectual and superior but have to try to prove that on a running forum because they’ve already failed to do that in real life and on more appropriately specific forums. These are the same people that also make the occasional posts asking why no one likes them.
I agree. Sometimes I find myself arguing with trolls just because they just like to argue. You'll never find common ground amongst them. After a few posts, I've had a belly full and just call it a day. You can block any poster who's messages you find inflammatory.
I've been tempted to do this a time or two. However I don't because if I did this, as an American I feel like I'd be giving up, voluntarily, my First Amendment rights. I've decided that I'll never do this. To me this would be akin to cutting off your nose to spite your face. My best advice is, if you don't care for a poster, don't read their posts. Wither you like it or not people are entitled to their thoughts/opinions. But that doesn't mean you have to read them or respond to them.
Jogging is good for cardiovascular health, burns visceral fat, is neuroprotective, and the outcome of that healthy lifestyle is a good and friendly outlook on life.
Running, on the other hand, damages the heart, makes you skinny fat, robs nutrients from the brain, and makes people bitter, ugly, and unhinged.
This is a message board full of REAL RUNNERS. What do you expect?
I think that people from Gen X just have a thicker skin and are generally more insensitive, so welcome across as angry when we’re just being sarcastic. That can cause offense and misunderstandings at times. This website is founded by X people.
I think later Generations have less tolerance for frustration than previous ones do. I f I see something racist/trans phobic/homophobic posted, I report it and move on. I don’t think that the brojos embrace those views but they are more tolerant of freeish speech. If I don’t like something that I see here, I ignore it or don’t come back for a while.
What bothers me the most is that I see a surprising amount of young people posting here who have what I see to be an extremely negative and pessimistic mentality. Emotive arguments are much more important to them than facts. For example, it’s not enough to not be racist, you must be explicitly antiracist. They are sure that we’re going to hell in a hand basket and they are unaware of the reality of their circumstances. By world standards, we are all insanely rich. We have shelter, food, internet access etc. I see an inability to look past our problems and be grateful for what we do have. This comes across as entitlement and snowflaky to older people.
So I don’t think things are so bad here. Mostly a matter of perspective.
