Let me start by saying I am looking for civil, intelligent discussion, and not just mindless bashing which seems to occur all too commonly on threads such as these.
It seems it is often thought that soccer players are great runners, and it would make sense given all the running they do. There are also many great runners who come from a soccer background(from those who start in middle/high school and win state championships to those like Jeanne Hennessey who start after college). However, are all/most, or many this good at running or is it relegated to simply some, or a select few. I have always been confused by this topic. The reason being, I was an ok runner(4:24, 1:57). Who was from a state(Missouri), and more specifically a city (St. Louis) that excels in soccer and has many participants. I saw more than one example of a good runner who played soccer in high school and switched with immediate success. However, during my high school time, the soccer team won multiple state championships, and was highly nationally ranked. However, I never once heard of any great running feat from any of our excellent soccer players, and saw many gym class miles with the fastest soccer mile being around 5:50. And yes, I can assure you they were trying. Further, many of the great runners who came from soccer players, I would later find out, had been only ok at soccer. And these guys had experienced immediate success(think anywhere from sub 4:50 to even 4:25 miles as freshman in the first year of track). This always perplexed me. I also noted that the St. Louis high school running scene was no great shakes (at least during my time 4 years back), which didnt seem to make sense if soccer players should be such great runners. I guess the best conclusion I could come to was that while soccer built up a high level of fitness and many players were indeed very fast, there was not much of a correlation between soccer and running ability. I have been told by a soccer player I know from college that there is generally "one really fast player" on each team. Perhaps this hasn't been the clearest post, but I'd love some honest anecdotes of soccer players running experiences (personal or observed, good and bad!), and try to figure out just what exactly the correlation is between running and soccer ability.
