There are probably not that many people in the US who think 10 years hard labor made sense for what she did, though there are perhaps more people who would say something like, "when you go to a different country you put yourself at the mercy of their laws." I agree 10 years hard labor is absurd, and I'm not enough of a moral relativist to go along with the quoted statement above, beyond the mere practical consideration that one should be aware of how badly and in what ways the country you're visiting is draconian in its laws, and protect yourself accordingly. Hell, I'm even willing to entertain the possibility that Griner didn't smuggle the hash in at all -- I don't trust the Russian government enough to just believe what it says without skepticism.
So having said all of that, what has this millionaire athlete suffered in America that is proportional to the frank injustice of her would-be sentence in Russia of 10 years hard labor for a pretty minor and ultimately victimless crime? Sorry, let me be more specific: what has this millionaire athlete who the American government made an extraordinary effort to bring home, an effort it would not have made for nearly anybody else you could name, suffered in America that is proportional to the frank injustice of her would-be sentence in Russia?
