No but it will make you look like a bike geek
I had a bike roof mount, and now a hitch mount.
The problem with the roof mount was taking it on and off (mine was detachable), and no matter how much I tried, I often ended up scraping the car as I took the bike off or put it on. This happened a lot more often than I thought i would have done.
Also, you have to remember when you have the bike on there so you don't wreck it and the car as you pull into garages or the like. As much as you think you won't, these things do happen.
Then I got a hitch rack because the wife wanted to use it but wasn't able to lift bikes onto the roof rack. The hitch rack ended damaging the car and it is easier to use, but is a pain when when it comes to parking.
Roof rack looked a lot cooler but the car got many dings and using it was more of a hassle.

Any rack that mounts on a painted surface (most roof racks or trunk rack) will likely cause some paint scratching at the mount point. Hitch mounted rack is less likely to cause damage, but they tend to be in the way of trunk/hatch access more than a roof rack.
I have a Thule roof rack with bike mounts, but use it mostly to carry kayaks and such. Bikes usually go inside the car unless we're carrying a lot of other gear. This keeps the bike out of the elements but there's a chance of damaging the bike or trashing the car's interior going that route.
If you use stuff, there will eventually be damage, but pristine unused stuff is kind of pointless.
Not sure if it will damage your car or not, but it WILL signal to the public that you are a huge douchebag.
We had a roof rack and I was always worried I'd drive into an underground garage without removing the bike. That would damage your bike, rack, and car. The racks that mount via straps probably won't damage your car but I'm not comfortable attaching a $10K product using straps that flap in the wind and my somewhat limited mechanical skills. A hitch rack is probably the most secure way to carry a bike. I suppose you could back into something but with cameras today, it'd be your own fault
I drive my cars until they no longer function and then donate them to charity. What's the big deal about a couple scratches and dings. A car is a tool to be used for transportation and work. That being said, a hitch mount is great if you have a car that has a hitch.
