Never a bad idea for a 13:40 high schooler. everyone can have bad days.
No it wasn't a good idea, they don't know whats going on behind them, you shouldn't run that recklessly in a team title hunt. Thuoy at NCAA's should that to perfection. NP benefitted from the lack of top individuals that are also on teams. At an NCAA type meet where basically everybody counts as a point, they would have blown damn near 50 points with this finish. It didn't cost them today, but it could have been worse.
THEY ARE 17. 17-year-olds make I’ll-conceived decisions all the time—when they submit work late, when they stay up too late, when they eat too much Chipotle, when they drive too fast, when they jerk off with the door open, when they plagiarize from Wikipedia, when they cross the redline too early. It comes with the genetic territory. It’s normal.
All of NP top 5 were seniors. #7 closed the gap on #6 quite well. Only 22 seconds behind him. And very far from last actually Aaron Cantu beat the other Cantu by 1 minute and 2 seconds
Over the last split from 2.75 to 3.11 miles, Newbury Park had the top two times, Aaron and Brayden. They also had the slowest, Lex, despite there being a 19:45 finisher and Lex himself running 15:36. If the distances are accurate (they don't quite seem to be), Aaron covered the last 580 meters 33 seconds faster than Lex (1:25 vs 1:58). ~75% of the girls race closed faster including each of the first 89 runners.
I don't think that's just hitting a wall, Im sure some more information about what happened to him will come out. Unfortunate his (hs)xc career ended this way, but I'm sure he's happy for Aaron and the team
Dang I love cross country. The boys race was one for the books. The craziest last 1K I've ever seen. If they ran that race next week the results could be totally different, What an awesome sport. I love it!
Same with many Texas teams. SLC this year. What happened to them?
Grapevine finished where we thought they would
Corning got top 10
CBA has also won the whole thing, so there's that.
Never gonna happen, but I'd like to see NXN rotate through the time zones so we can see the effect of travel on the kids.
I want to see the top kids run at Holmdel Park. NJ bias from me, but Ive raced all the big courses on the East Coast between HS & College, and nothing compares to Holmdel for me.

It would be tough to squeeze in everyone at Holmdel. That narrowing at the top of the first hill would be carnage.

Isn’t that the exact point of the post — that it wasn’t a good idea? It didn’t say they were stupid or abnormal or defective, just that their tactics were unsound.
Making sound decisions is part of the deal when you get to this level. They aren’t racing seasoned pros; they are racing other 17 year olds.
I so agree. It was a great race and exciting to watch. It's also nice to have professional announcers and camera work. Great for high school xc and would love to see more it.
