A while ago I posted on here that I was excited for the XC season but disappointed by how empty the calendar was and how almost no races mattered outside of Joe Plame, Cowboy Jamboree, Nuttycombe, conferences, and regionals. It used to be there were quite a few more races on the calendar.
Most of us were in agreement.
But does anyone who matters care about such things? Cross-country was not really designed as a spectator sport. There's a growing market of people who watch thanks to Lets Run and stuff but I don't think they're enough to make either coaches change their ways, or the people who make the rules for NCAA XC change.
My rule change suggestion would be in order to be eligible in Nationals you have to be in a minimum of X meets or have an injury waver which would have motivated, say, Isai Rodriguez to enter a race somewhere in the regular season
