It’s so awesome to see them dominate D3 in such epic fashion, when I was in HS there it was pretty rare for them to even come top 3 in their league, which wasn’t even a good league for XC. 3 guys in the top 10 and 4 guys under 15 is absolutely nuts for a D3 program and up until about 6 or 7 years ago that kind of depth was almost unheard of outside of the southern section
Didn’t mean to say in HS there, I went to school somewhere close by
They would have qualified this year if that 4-5 gap wasn’t so large.
They lose 3 seniors but return the following from that race:
Alsaidi - 15:19 - 11
J Oliviera - 15:55 - 11
Cavanaugh - 16:28 - 10 (first year on XC so expect him to improve)
Also junior M Oliviera - 9:50 in track but got hit by a bus in the summer according to some interviews. So he was JV this year. Next year he is looking to come back strong. Will probably be up there with their top 3.
Now, if they find a fifth, they could possibly make a trip to NXN next year.
Sounds like a great school for Broen Holman to transfer to. His fastest teammate is running 19 minute 5ks. With him on the team they should be able to make NXN
Their #1 in xc transferred in this Fall.
Would be amazing, but idk if i see that happening. Oakdale is like 40 min away from sonora
Here are some interesting facts about Oakdale that may make what they just accomplished even more amazing.
1. Last year they were 4th in DIII. Prior to that, in the history of their school they had never qualified a boys team to the state meet. Not only that, they had never even qualified a single individual boy to the state meet. Now they just won in dominate fashion. Wow!
2. If the Oliveira twin hadn't been in that accident and was healthy it would be safe to assume he would have finished around where his brother Jackson did which was 15:55. Plug that time in as part of their top five and they finish with the second fastest team time of the day behind NP!
3. Their coach: Most coaches who coach state championship teams have at least some running experience at a high level. While their coach was a two time NCAA DI All American, it was in the sport of wrestling. Really? Running and wrestling are basically completely opposite sports. Who does that?
Considering all that, this team from a small town with zero running pedigree perhaps just pulled off the most logic defying feat in the history of the state meet.
Doug soles has never done XC before. Only track (sprinting. Never distance). In fact, he was hired as a XC coach when that was never on his mind. They AD just needed a XC coach. So he started learning what the sport is all about while coaching. Now he takes his teams to nationals
He could somehow move there. If he doesn’t he wouldn’t be allowed to run varsity until October
There are people that run for NP live even farther than 40 mins away from it.
It only takes 5 runners.
All ya need is two sets of twins and another kid with talent and your the best team ever😁
I’m sure those guys were disappointed but it’s not over yet. They still got next year. If they made it this year, Granada would have kept their record of 0 NXN appearances. And they have 6 seniors. So it’s good to see Granada make it
The sophomore who was #5 played football last year and he is the younger brother of a senior who scores
I’d love to add to this and tell everyone a little about Oakdale. I currently run for Oakdale. We work really hard and love to see people admiring and supporting our success, it means a lot. The first 2 points this guy shared are pretty spot on. For the third one it is pretty factual too. Our Coach Moreno was an amazing athlete. He ran Cross Country and Track during Highschool along with wrestling. He was a very good runner and might I add probably a better runner than wrestler in Highschool running prs of 4:17/9:11, so he knows a “little” about running. He loved wrestling and It really payed off and became at 2 time All-American at Cal Poly. He still is an amazing athlete and does workouts with our top guys a lot. Being from a small town and being able to achieve this means the world to us. Our training is pretty simple and I think we do it right. We build a really strong base from May to October, with longer thresholds and higher mileage. We don’t ever really increment speed until later in the season. Our goal is the peak at the right time and based off our results you guys can see we do. We might not run fast at the beginning of the season, but in Cross Country all that matters is November.
To answer your question about Broen Holman; we are all really good friends with him and got to spend a couple days training in mammoth with him over the summer, along with doing occasional workouts with him. We’d love for him to be apart of our team, but we know everything would have to align. For Broen his Dad Coaches at Stan State in Turlock, where his Dad has to drive through Oakdale daily, so it could work for him. But that being said in reality he had a lot of people to train with because his Dad coaches a college team.
I know this is just brief and there is more to it. And I’d love to answer any questions you guys may have!
Also an oakdale runner here, to add on to whats been said I actually think the 15 man team has played to our advantage with our team dynamic being like no other I’ve seen, at least in cross country. We spend an absurd amount of time around each other in and out of practice. Being so familiar with each other has made every race we’ve ran feel so natural and its so much easier to rely and have faith in each other. On top of team dynamics we get the benefit of more tailored training for each person.
The Internet claims they have 1700 kids at the school. That is huge! It's no suprise a school that large does well at a state meet.
The real question is why are only 15 kids out for the team? A normal school that size has 60 boys or so on the team.
Wow the cover of this Oakdale milesplit page is a fast horse.
Sounds like a perfect school for FastHorse to go to. He would help Oakdale a lot.
Ventura would still qualify for NXN without him next year. This year they only had 1 senior (who didn’t even score!), a top junior missing from state, and a varsity freshman who we can expect to step up next year.
The local newspaper Modesto Bee didn’t even mention their state title. Yet there was tons of football stuff on the sports page, but no CC.
I took upon myself to send an email to the sports editor with Oakdale’s State success. Maybe they’ll get a recognition they deserve.
When I get to high school I want to be a cross country state champion said no kid from Oakdale ever. Any kid there with any athletic abilities plays football, baseball, wrestles, and or does rodeo. Thats a bit of a generalization but it's more or less the truth. So having just 15 boys on their team is not surprising. If you want to get some idea of what Oakdale is like search the “Oakdale Bud” on youtube and watch some of his videos. His videos are parody, but capture the true essence of the town.
Oakdale does have 2 pairs of brothers entered at RunningLane
