Say if a multi eventer just wanted to do a 5k road race for fun, how realistic is 17 minutes? Or 18? Or 20?

1500m is not a pure aerobic event. Anything 2k and up is essentially predominantly aerobic ability. So the decathlete would struggle mightily at a 5k.
It is likely this person could run a 19 minute 5K. Some may be a bit faster and some a bit slower.
4:45 1500 for a decathlete would probably be more like 18:xx, I ran 17:10 off of 4:17 as a 15 / 3 guy with relatively under developed endurance
Did you weigh more than 190 lbs. as do many of most elite male multi-event athletes? If you're not close to 190 lbs., it doesn't matter what you raced 1500m & 5000m for this discussion.
Like most decathletes, I'm primarily a speed-based guy. When I was in 4:45 shape, I couldn't crack 19.
How good are they at the throwing events?...
I’d guess +\- 18:00 sounds about right.
Your running roughly a 5:05 mile which would translate more to 17:00-17:30 for a true middle distance runner, but most decathletes are getting their 1500m fitness from anaerobic work and (relatively) short distance runs.
