It was correct. California is crazy good this year. 4 teams in the boy and girls to NXN. This may the first time 8 teams from California go NXN.
And once again I’ll toot my own horn. Since August I’ve been saying Los Altos girls was very good and had a a chance to make it NXN. They didn’t have a great day, most runners ran slower than Clovis, their #1 had a horrible day, yet they battled as a team to make it to NXN. Most importantly of all they were saved by freshman Anderson. She ran 19:00 at Clovis and 18:27 at today’s state championship.
Based on state meet results…. I think next year’s top 4 teams (merge) will look like this. Boys 1- Ventura (not even close!). Placed 6th and returns everyone 2- Trabuco Hills. Returns all but 5th and 7th man. 3- San Clemente. Returns only 4 but there are many people on JV that could be their fifth next year 4- Dana Hills. Putting them here because they have been to NXN so many times before, great program and only lose their 5 and 7. Usually they lose a lot more than that. Seeing Noonan make it will give the team motivation to try to do the same.
Crystal Springs will need a fifth man to challenge one of these teams. Great Oak has some depth to reload.
Cathedral looks solid and young
Girls 1- Buchanan. Dominated the state and returns 5. Plus some freshmen that may come in and help 2- JSerra Catholic. Returns all but #5 and #7 3- Newbury Park. Loses only Hawkins. With Brotcke and Spaulding healthy they could be a threat. Will have a giant senior class 4- Los Altos. Placed second and brings back all but numbers 2 and 5.
Watchlist: Campolindo Clovis North Ventura Del Notre

I have tried to collect all the best speed ratings done by TullyRunners for California through the year, and also extrapolated further down on those races using the per second rating he had come up with. I didn't do any races on my own, just the ones on the TullyRunners site.
Based on that, I think the top 6 returning teams are:
Ventura Anthony Fast Horse 11 188.18 Micah Grossman 11 182.47 Nick DeGeorge 11 179.31 Hollis Costa 11 170.17 Henry Hammel 11 169.63 Blake Harris 9 150.00
San Clemente Brett Ephraim 11 182.00 Pierce Clark 11 175.67 Taj Clark 11 173.00 Dallin Harrington 9 167.20 Isaac Gould 11 161.67 Kai Olsen 11 155.37
Great Oak Gabriel Rodriguez 11 181.33 Jeffrey Keeney 11 172.90 Jacob Brown 10 163.67 Nathan Lennox 11 163.37 Michael Rodriguez 11 162.07 Jack Paradise 10 160.60 Westin Brown 10 157.00 Kai Marotta 11 156.57
Trabuco Hills Carsten Williams 10 179.61 Ryan Stanley 11 172.60 Dylan Jubak 10 170.66 Micah Clemons 11 169.69 Eli Griggs 11 152.81
Dana Hills Evan Noonan 10 189.59 Garrett Woodruff 11 170.00 Logan Harris 11 164.57 Oliver Hunter 9 162.92 Mike Ayala 11 159.40
Crystal Springs Uplands Benjamin Bouie 10 179.02 Tarik Baker 10 173.88 Oliver Boesch 10 163.71 Dean Wu 11 161.77 Matthew Morris 11 153.17
Honorable mention (and I can list the ratings out if someone wants) -
Clovis East, Yosemite, St Francis
Don't take this list too seriously. TullyRunners can't do all the races obviously, and I may have missed things on top of that. But if you are really into looking at this stuff, it is a starting point.
According to my tallies, 89 California sophomores recorded a speed rating of 160 or greater, including 13 of 180 or more. Can double check that once TullyRunners posts an updated national list, since I think anything of 180 or more will make that list.
44 California freshman recorded a speed rating of 150 or more. Yet the top freshman at the state was *120th* in the merge. There were 16 freshman girls just in the top 100 of the merge, including 3 of the top 12.
Newbury Park boys - number of seniors in the top 7 2017- 2 seniors 2018- 2 seniors 2019- 2 seniors 2020- 2 seniors 2021- 2 seniors 2022- 5 seniors. Would have been 6 if Martinez was still on the team
Thomas Lerdall - never made the top 7 for Wayzata High School, but was the #1 runner for St. Olaf at MIAC Championships in 2017 and he placed second overallJake Campbell. Was midpack JV for Edina until senior year when he sco...
FastHorse is a junior Ventura will be way better than NP next year.
Imagine if Hunter Jones was on NP. Benzie Central is nothing special outside of him
Hey dwearsh, serious question. What is the obsession with Newbury Park. Do you have a connection of some kind?
No, what I’m saying is if Jones went to NP, the Fernandez record would have had a better chance of being broken. Because Jones would have had better people to train with. And he would have pushed the Youngs to be even better. In this thread someone said that Jones would have a 14:24. Another said 13:59
How does Newbury Park not recruit a guy named "Fast Horse"?
Fast horse should stay where he is. How about the other way around? Recruit Doshi next year and they will replace that one and only senior who is leaving Ventura
What do you guys think were the biggest surprises?
I think that the way Crystal Springs Uplands School finished in the merge was impressive. 3 sophomores scoring too. Hopefully they find 2 more studs for 2024. This team and Yosemite will battle out in d5 for the next few years

Oakdale finishing as high as they did in the merge = super impressive. If they had a better 5th they would have snuck in the top 3

The low score that Buchanan was able to get. They are an all time great team but all the other teams in that division have to be pretty bad for them to pull that one off with their team.
