No one who's looked at the entering classes of these two schools in the last decade still thinks this. There is definitely a group of old white guys down here who still think you need to send your kid out of state to get a good education, but I think the rest of us understand that UNC, Florida, Wake, Tech, Emory, etc. are basically equivalent schools.
The only state schools that I think are generally regarded as clearly better than Florida would be Michigan, Berkeley, UCLA (because of how hard it is to get into these days), and probably UVA, but just barely. (I'm ignoring the military academies...)
Doth protest too much. Michigan is variably ranked in the top 20 in the WORLD and usually #1 in public schools. Also has the most top 10 programs in the US of any college. The only reason U of M is not number one among public and private schools is the all powerful "reputation" metric that favors princeton, harvard....
Although to be fair, I think most of us assumed Fla was on par with the U down in Miami. So I learned something today. Dont blame me, blame Urb and his prison release program, aka football team.
Oh, and yes she seems like she is super happy at Fla.
Mia Bernett entered the transfer portal yesterday and is listed under "does not want to be contacted."
That is huge news, if true.
Mia is a huge talent. Why did she not run cross-country? Does she plan to eventually run XC, or just stay on the track? On the track, does she plan to focus on mid-distance for a few years?
If she is not currently a XC athlete, then clarification on the transfer window dates would be appreciated. The latest transfer window for XC athletes is closed. However, an athlete can transfer up to 30 days after their coach leaves.
It is somewhat mind-boggling to think that she has run the fastest collegiate 6k cross-country time, ever. That time could stand for years into the future. For that reason alone, the Ole Miss course should have been re-measured after the race.
But according to Coach Solinsky, he asked the Ole Miss coach, and the answer was that, if anything, their course was a little long, although tangents could possibly have made it a little bit short. However, a few will argue that PV does not know how to run tangents. (emoji  )
Repeat after me…
TIMES DON’T MATTER IN CROSS COUNTRY…
Actually, XC times have important relevance, but require nuanced understanding of the particulars.

Barnett ran XC - was 44th at Nationals and UVA's first finisher. They finished 9th even with Menninger finishing 159th after being int heir top 3 most of the year. I think she may have lost a shoe early. The team had a chance at 5th.
Any collegiate distance athlete that plans/hopes to continue this sport successfully for many years (I.e., eventually go pro), should seriously consider the scholastic options situated at altitude. That is a huge factor into why Ethiopian and Kenyan athletes are successful. The beneficial epigenetic expressions from living at altitude can develop over many years beyond that of just going to altitude camp a couple times a year.
Mia did run xc, #1 spot on a rapidly improving team that finished 9th, and she had what seemed to be a perfect freshman year.
As xc, ind, outdoor is year round, am not sure how transfer windows work. UVA is now between academic semesters, so she may fall into that window somehow to still move before spring '23 term begins.

NCAA Rules Expert Rick Allen shares NCAA Transfer Portal Windows for 2022 Fall Sport Athletes and when DI student-athletes can enter if coach leaves or is fired.

Can anyone confirm this? Truly a bombshell if true
Some other coach access it. I am staring at it right now. In the comments:
"SA is looking to transfer for winter/spring 2023 term"
Again, she doesn't want to be contacted by other institutions. There is a little red triangle by their name. Which means they found their school(s) already.

Mia Barnett might be homesick and wants to come back to California. Her high school is only 30 miles from UCLA. Sean Brosnan will shock the world with his first high quality transfer! UCLA is on the rise!
