I think their top 5 are pretty well set. They just all need to stay healthy come state. If they can do that they could maybe challenge for a state title
Noe ran 4:40 last night. There are 5 girls at 4:41 or faster. Who is entered in the mile from out of state? Why is Drake not providing updates to hype the event and get coaches excited to enter Iowa athletes?
Iowa City high dropped a 7:47. Do you think anyone can beat that?
That would win state most years. When I anchored an Iowa HS state champion 4x8 back in the day we ran 7:48 and it was the fastest time run in years. Given the increased depth of fast Iowa middle distance kids (4:24 1600s might miss Drake…from ‘07-‘10 if you broke 4:30 you were golden) there are a few other teams I could see running 7:47 at Drake or State, like Johnston, Waukee and Ankeny. (Dowling could run that time too IF Heidesch runs the 4x8 at those meets, but I’m skeptical that he will).
Nobody can match City High though, because 7:47 is far from their potential. Think: Smith 1:52.5, Washburn 1:53.0, Thompson 1:55.0, Noreldaim 1:56.0 = 7:36.5. If they don’t set an Iowa All Time Best it will be a disappointment.
They ran it without one of their top 800 guys who was out if town. Dowling and ICH are capable of 7:38.
I can’t really see Dowling running 7:38. If Heidesch and DeRocher went 1:51.5/1:56.5, they’d still need 2 guys to average 1:55.0…don’t see ‘em, considering Milligan and Flori seem like true distance types.

Yes I think 7:39 is possible, but it will be tough without competition. If it doesn't happen at Drake, it won't happen. At state, keeping legs fresh will be a big priority, and I don't think they'll even run Ammon on it at state, since he could score in the 1600 or the 400 as well.

You may be right, but I’m not convinced that these kids need to worry too much about running 2-4 races over the 3 day state meet. If I were the City High coach I’d take the 10 points in the 4x8, and the plan for districts/state would be:
3200 Washburn Carey
1600 Washburn Thompson
800 Smith Washburn or Thompson
4x800 Smith Washburn (not at districts, yes at state) Thompson Noreldaim
Medley Noreldaim (400) Smith (800)…with Noreldaim probably running the 800 at districts
And give Smith a 4th event in either the 400 or 4x4, wherever he has the best chance for points.

I think the 4x4 is certainly a lock at the point. I think I'd rather them take 10 or 8 points in the 4x8 without smith, and 3-4 points in the 400 or 1600 with smith. I think they win comfortably without smith in the 4x8. It's a risk, but I think this state meet will be highly contested win linn-mar and west high (booooo) right behind City.

pretty sure once bound is updated from last nights meets bump is at a 4:24xx. for 1600
Amazing how much the 1600 has progressed. I remember it being won in 4:18 one year and thinking that was incredible. Now we are on legit sub 4 watch.
I remember having a teammate get 6th at Drake with a 4:36. Now that wouldn't even qualify you. I remember 8:01 winning the 4x8. Now it wouldn't even place. It's crazy how much more competitive it is now than it was in 2008. Iowa will never be guilty of having good top end talent, but the depth is just crazy.
