My take on Tuohy and Henes is that they wouldn't publicly hint at breaking 15 if she was not already running times in practice that suggest it's possible.
Before usatf, Tuohy was talking about world standard as the goal, so something has changed. I kind of doubt it will happen at this meet, but if it did I also would not be surprised.
If the cutoff for the 1st elite race is 15:20 then there must be a lot of pros planning to run...Virtually all collegians will be in 2nd heat of 5,000. Very few will make the 8:55 for the 3,000 either.
NCSt was conservative in the seed time she was given for the 3000m last year. So if they are talking about sub-15, my guess is her workouts are showing it, and what she did at nationals supports the estimation. There was an overhead shot as she started reeling Valby in where the acceleration was really noticeable. It was like a sports car shifting gears.
That said an indoor sub-15 is very challenging. The race would have to be perfectly paced and Tuohy would have to be feeling good. Anything sub-15:10 would be great.
Thanks for sharing. Ok it says pacers at 15:20 for 5k. 8:55 for 3k. I wonder who is going for the 3k?
Last year Ceili McCabe won the 3000 in 8:52.52. Katelyn Tuohy was 4th in 8:54.17 and Sam Bush was 5th in 8:54.37. Just considering collegians, I would say McCabe and Bush for sure. No Tuohy since she more than likely will be in the 5000. Parker Valby has a 8:53.89 so she would qualify but I would rather see her in the 5000 if she were to compete though I think she misses the 5000 cut off by 0.10 seconds. I'm not really sure what other collegians are qualified.
The faster 5000m race will very probably be paced at ~15:00 because 14:57 is the qualifying time for Worlds 2023 and the elite women will want to get this and should be able to run a slight negative split for 14:50ish times after hitting 9:00 at 3k. So if Tuohy runs at around 8th position in elite race she might hit 3000m at 9:02-03 and even if she does not manage to negative-split she could still beat her PB and get around 15:05-08.
FWIW I think indoor tracks admit now times as fast as outdoors in time-trial type races in 3000/5000m.
Parker Valby won’t be there. She missed the cutoff and wouldn’t be allowed to race in the elite section against Tuohy anyway.
I don’t see her being motivated to race against anyone else.
On the other hand many collegians use this race to chalk up a good time for NCAA Indoor qualification early on. So, if hypothetically Valby wanted to ultimately run 5000 and 3000 she could run a good time now and get that out of the way, in a race with pacers.
. . . I’m ready for my mind to be blown by the magic of the BU track.
Any word on which stars will use that XC fitness to smash a 5k in two weeks? . . .
Looks like another Charlie Hicks special is brewing . . . the BU meet is on Stanford's schedule.
And, for those who remember how good Zofia Dudek was 3 years ago December when she won FootLocker a week after Tuohy won NXN, we could actually see her run her first track race as a collegian . . . possibly in the same race as Tuohy. Not that she'd give Katelyn any competition. Just an interesting scenario, given that in 2019 many/most thought Zofia was the better of the two at the time.

I would love to see Parker Valby in the Elite 3000m. But if she wants to take a break at this point in the season, it's understandable.
I wish to clarify my thinking on this. It is early for the indoor season, and coming off of a hard cross-country season, the athlete first needs to assess their physical condition. I see this 3000m as an opportunity for the ultimate VO2Max workout. Parker Valby has now demonstrated an incredible ability to know her paces and 'run by feel', so it would not bother me to see no pacers in this race. Just let Parker go, as the NAU coach says, "Gas, Gas, GAS".
So that said, if Parker were to end up pacesetting the whole race, and then get nipped at the line by a pro, that would be okay. The objective would be to get some practice going through indoor race experience on the track again, and getting a great VO2max session.
But again, she may be already planning her time-off. If she wants to do this 3000m before her break, that would be fun to watch. But if not, that's fine too.
Now I wish to add something that would really be fun for her fans. I would like to see Parker do some type of NIL deal with a watch company, like Garmin or Polar, and then have her record her Heart Rate in this race, and then make it available online. That could be cool!
This seems correct. But if elite women like BTC will be running at that meet, there is not much use in a 15:15 indoor 5k for them. Indoor 5k is boring, it's main use is for getting a qualifier or record... ;) So IF BTC or other elites are racing, I am sure some will want to run below the 14:57 worlds qualifiert and I doubt they all want to run a huge negative split after a 9:12 3k. So there might be two rabbits, one for 9:00 and one for 9:14.
