#katelyntuohy eats up parker valby's 12-second lead in the last 2k and shatters the course record by more than 30 seconds. #ncstate wins and repeats as #ncaa...
Now that we can analyze splits. Valby hit 2.83k on 19:33 pace and 4k on 19:26 pace. She finished at 19:30 which is essentially even, and a slight negative split from her half way mark.
Tuohy hit 2.83k at 19:51 pace, 4k at 19:45 pace and finished in 19:27. Tuohy's last 2k was run at 18:55 pace.
Valby ran great tbh. Tuohy, was going to no matter. And probably would've won by more if she had no team to run for.
She is someone to be admired both as a person and an athlete.
I simply cannot think of anyone in running who has had as much pressure and scrutiny as Katelyn and that was since she was in high school. Even coming into this race, there were like a million threads, all of running media hyping Tuohy Valby over and over, and for her (honestly both of them) to keep composure and put on a great show...that is so hard to do. even Jenny Simpson couldn't handle the pressure as a grad student and Olympian in 2009.
Katelyn is a Grade A teammate and has shown that over and over. In Emma A's podcast, when Emma Abrahamson asked her for her favorite memory, she said it was when her teammate qualified for nationals. Nothing about her accomplishments, and it honestly seemed genuine. The attention she gets makes her uncomfortable, but her teammates accomplishments are something she seems to get a lot of joy out of.
She also is learning to stand up for the sport in subtle ways. The "dam" after the rude question directed at Parker, a competitor was one way to show leadership without making herself the center of attention.
With all the pressure and talent in the world she has really risen to become someone everyone in the sport can look up to.
Where was the rest of the U of FL team? They should have been right up there with NC State. If you have a talented runner you should be surrounding them with talent.
I competed against State over 40 years ago. These generalizations are hard to prove, but to a one we thought the State people to be remarkably genuine and nice people. I talked to the State team at ACC’s this year and the impression was the same, as if I was in a time warp. I can easily see why talented young women want to go there, and Touhy’s gesture in handing over the trophy without a moment’s hesitation was not surprising.
Tuohy chasing down Valby was exciting for fans to watch. The race lived up to the hype and Tuohy didn't look exhausted. Both Tuohy and Valby executed their style of racing in good fashion. I'm very glad it was broadcast live for us all to witness a great race. This was great for run fans.
Looking back to 2010, Tuohy has now joined Abby D'Agostino (Cooper) (2012 Outdoor 5000), Julie Bottorf (2011 Outdoor 10000) and Karissa Schweitzer (2016 XC) as the only 20 yo F NCAA winners in that time.
I wish we had a better sense of Tuohy's move. I'm not sure why there was such little video from the lead gator. I thought Valby was going to win the race until I saw a little dot from the drone that was Tuohy closing on Valby. Tuohy really cruised when she made her move. What a monster!
When she was handed the team trophy, she handed it to her teammates to hold in the center of the photo and then moved over to the side. It was subtle, and I doubt she even thought about it, but it struck me as a classy move. She could have held the trophy and had everyone surround her. Her instinct was to hand it to others.

It looked like she really started moving after the hill at about 4.5K - on the downhill toward the 5K that followed.

A victory by Katelyn Tuohy and a third-place finish by Kelsey Chmiel was the key in lifting North Carolina State – which has held the No. 1 ranking in the USTFCCCA national poll all season long ahead of UNM – to the team victory as they successfully defended their national title. The Lobos caught every team in front of them aside from the Wolfpack, which claimed the victory with 114 points. New Mexico finished with 140 points on Saturday. “In 2018 we ran a fantastic race and just got beat, and today I’d say was the same thing,” Franklin said referencing the team’s runner-up finish to Colorado five years ago. “We had good energy before, we didn’t take ourselves too seriously, and it went as well as it could have possibly gone. There is nothing more we could have done.”
