Things aren’t looking too hot for Stillwater. Even compared to their SEC rival Mounds View they probably won’t even be close. One thing though is that both head coaches are retiring so both could have a few down years. Times will be Personal bests not counting the SEC course. Second times are track two miles pbs. Grade is current year.
Stillwater top returners
10 Dylan Riniker - 15:57 and 9:46
11 Ethan Foote - 16:12 and 10:05 (10:35 sb)
10 Andrew Walsh - 16:37 and 10:02
10 Max Gerald - 17:21 and 10:51
11 Brady Bushlack - 17:39 and 10:50
9 George Nelson - 17:53 and 10:39
10 Logan liveringhouse - 18:08 (No track)
Mounds View Top returners
10 Owen Kalmes - 16:05 and 10:02 (2022)
11 Cayden Stoner - 16:18 and 9:52
11 Levi Hammerbeck - 16:21 and 10:03
11 Otto Coleman - 16:23 and 10:04
11 August Arnold - 16:29 and 10:12
10 Sam Geer - 17:05 and 4:44 indoor is only time
10 Joseph Cole - 17:25 and 10:20
So not only are last years cross times significantly better, the track times are also much better. Mounds View is going to have a lot more depth and Stillwater seems to have some injury problems as they often do. They are going to have no room for error come Fall and I personally don’t think they are going to be able to pull much off other than there couple of wins at meets in the middle of nowhere. No one seems to know who either of the replacements are for either team so that could still affect things greatly.

Stillwater is at risk of not even making state next year. White Bear Lake is returning their 1,2,3, and 5 from sections, so they are looking to avenge their third place at sections. East Ridge is moving into that section and is returning everyone (including their 3 state qualifiers). If they can close the 4-5 gap they will be a real threat.
Mounds View will be just fine next year. They will probably still win SEC. They should be able to win their section easily since their section has had no competition lately. I also think Mounds View will have a good chance to podium at state, but it’s not guaranteed. I think Wayzata and Minnetonka will get the top 2 podium spots, but the third spot will be up for grabs. It will be a fight between Mounds View and Minneapolis Southwest (if they can find a fifth man) for the last podium spot. Actually, if Southwest finds a fifth man, they will challenge for the top 2 spots.
Edina, Eden Prairie, Jefferson, and East Ridge look really good too.
But Mounds View will have a lot of seniors, so they will probably be down after class of 2024 graduates.
East Ridge returners (not including SEC times) Schultz - 11 - 16:05 / 9:44 / 4:37 Mestery - 11 - 16:47 / 10:23 / 4:47 Devine - 10 - 16:46 / 4:45 Soenen - 11 - 17:11 / 4:54 Paine - 9 - 4:54 (no XC results, not sure if he will do XC) C McNeish - 11 - 18:13 / 5:02 / 10:58. His standout brother (1600 / 9:28 / 4:23) graduated in 2022. We will see if the younger one steps up during his senior year. Creighton - 11 - 17:48, but no track times.
Other young guys that could step up. Carlsen - 8 - 17:50 Gramer - 10 - 17:54 / 5:05 Aldrich - 10 - 17:30 (at sections in 2021) G Mestery - 8 - 17:44 (at sections in 2021)

Geer also ran a 10:01 3200 at the Wayzata relays
Geer also ran 16:29 last XC season, and ran a 4:38 1600 a couple weeks back.
There is a group of girls in northern rural class A that have started running together over the winter and are emerging in track season with some pretty nice 1600 times. They come from about 5 schools and run mile repeats against each other. It is a fun dynamic to watch as they have become close friends and great competitors.

That's usually what happens in a hobby club. Their club is a running club. It's good that the girls are doing a good thing.
Thoughts on Les Bolstad as the new MN State XC course:
1. Parking at the lots & ramp on the St. Paul UMN campus, and at the Fairgrounds. Sounds o.k. to me. Circulate some buses for fans between the golf course and the parking, and it should be o.k.
2. Arrange to have a good variety of food trucks on-site. Perhaps not the same as the dining hall in Buntrock at St. Olaf, but a good selection of hot food from food trucks would beat nothing. 3. Put up a big heated tent like the one at NXR in Sioux Falls. Fans need somewhere to warm up vs. no heated options, such as the field house and the gym that St. Olaf offered.
4. Where would the awards ceremonies be held? The gym at St. Olaf was great for those.
I wonder if the course will be "tested" prior to state. Though its at same venue as Griak, would be exciting/risky to have the state meet be the first ever race on a new course.
I agree that parking/shuttles should be okay. Not sure on awards...anywhere nearby that could do it? Don't know area too well.
Sentimentally, a little sad that state won't be at Olaf. It had its flaws, but something special about the energy there and looking out from behind the starting line when the gun goes off.
Minneapolis Southwest has some young talent stepping up and adding some depth to the team Eiden - 10 - 4:59 1600 / 18:02 5k Schendel - 7 - 5:09 1600 Bijnagte - 9 - 5:17 1600 Moriarty - 9 - 2:11 800 McGuinn - 9 - 18:48 5k. No track results. In addition to the stud sophomores they already have on varsity scoring - Ueland and Meyer.
This team will be in good hands even after Sam Scott graduates.

The state meet was at Bolstad until 1991. They used to just put a podium out on a flat bed trailer behind where the start and finish lines were. I always thought it was a good venue.
