I'm training in the streak lt 4 still, which I've been getting off ebay. There are still some japanese flats on the market but you have to understand japanese or buy from ebay probably. A few skechers flats are still available from online retailers, but I prefer the lt 4 over them due to weird heel counters and them sometimes being very tight in the forefoot or loose in the heel.
I still have some Streak LTs for faster stuff/workouts where I change shoes for intervals. I used to love LunarRacers for longer tempos and workouts where I warmed up/cooled down in my flats.
The Brooks Hyperion Tempo is good. Lightweight (listed at 7.3 ounces) and very, very durable. I've done everything from intervals to long runs in them, and I race in them from 5K to the marathon. They're pretty stiff right out of the box, but they do loosen up after a couple of runs. My favorite running shoe in many years; probably my favorite since the long-departed Adidas Rats Racer. Here's hoping Brooks doesn't discontinue it or ruin it with "updates", as seems to happen with every other shoe I like.
Translating to "Tiger Racer", the TARTHER™ JAPAN sneaker features its signature racing design that was commonly worn by marathon runners in the 80s. The sh
I'll second the streakfly as I just started using them and they are a good mix of the OG Peg Turbo and the old Lunaracers. Maybe a little soft and squishy for a true minimalist but I think they strike a good balance for daily training.
man, i hear you. another vote for A9 and fastwitch. if there's anything else readily available, i don't know about it. if these go, i'm going to start making my own shoes.
Is there any standout difference between the A9 and fastwitch? Both have a pretty similar description on Saucony’s website & I can’t find any head to head reviews. And they are both retailing at the same $100 price point
1955 is right. to me, the FT slots perfectly between the A9 and kinvara in terms of both weight and stack height, and all have some sole flexibility (not super stiff). all have a 4mm drop. i like to race 5k/10k/HM in the A9 and marathons in the FT. The FT is also a good daily trainer. i usually reserve the kinvara for recovery.
but to answer your question, the FT has a tad more protection/cushion (and weight) than the A9, but both are good shoes.
Believe it or not, I really like my Atreyus for speedwork.
I'll caveat this by saying they do feel super cheap and don't last all that long (a lot of the sh!t is deserved), but they work, and they're so cheap, especially if you can snag an outdated colorway, that it might be worth a go.
Unfortunately Altra has finally killed off the Escalante Racer. Saw their new catalog at my local running store and it’s finally gone. 🙁 If you can find them nab a pair!
Regular Escalante 3 might work but it’s weight is squarely in the “daily trainer” category.
Altra Rivera might work, not too heavy, but it’s also gaining 2mm of stack height for next year, from 26mm to 28mm.
SC Pacer or Takumi Sen are good suggestions. Kinvara too, though Saucony is starting to get cute with it too…wait till you see the Kinvara Pro. 😳
old school flats are about dead, son will be the best you can do is late ‘00’s/early-mid’10’s “performance trainers”. Even those though are starting to morph into kinda super shoes.
They still make them. Just saw a new color on their website
I think the Type A is all that's left for true old-school flats outside of Japan. I bet they get discontinued sooner or later.
Modern shoe-wise, I've liked the Streakfly and Skechers Razor/Razor Elite/GoMeb (but Skechers is putting carbon fiber plates in everything now, too). The NB Pacers look interesting if they're durable.
Takumi Sen 8 is a highly cushioned carbon plated shoe.
They have "ENERGYRODS" not a carbon plate, though I would guess the gist is still the same. They weigh less than the supershoes I've looked at. Looks like size 9 is 6.5oz compared to lighter flats Type A9 (6oz), LT4 (5.5oz) and heavier supershoes Endorphin Pro3 (7.2oz), Next %2 (6.9oz), Metaspeed Sky (7.3oz).
This fully ventilated, open mesh, lightweight shoe is ideal for everyday training or a fast race day winner. But if you just want to rock the Colorado Flag, or need a sleek black or orange silhouette, this model is great as a...
