It's mostly about running technique. He reccommends not running year-round and doing lots of weight training and plyometrics instead.
The book is an absolute disgrace. Full of contradictions and vague, weak advice, if not outright bad information. Michael Yessis knows less than nothing about running.
In fairness he does note the fallacy of wearing bulky cushioned running shoes, which I agree with. But his training reccommendations are idiotic.
if you've ever read a training book, he basically rephrases everything you already know. The chapter on barefoot running is great; the distance running technique sections are 'okay'. If you are a high school coach, the "injury and diagnosis" section can be helpful. The section on healthy eating is vague and weak. Loaded with good intentions, the book is sadly more harmless than it is beneficial. To Yessis's credit, I personally think incorporation of plyometics and drills are way more helplful than most training books state (but not something you should just do in the offseason, or ever 'just' do).
If you're interested in the kinesiology and biomechanics of running, this is the best book I've ever seen! Lots of great pictures (even up close photos of a barefoot landing) and an entire chapter devoted to barefoot running. It was a very helpful book when I took Biomechanics. I could care less about drills and plyometrics, but the pictures mean a thousand words.
I bought this book. I took a few things from it - a lot of it I disagreed with, so left alone.
For me, even getting one or two items from a book is an excellent return on investment. Additionally, when I disagree with something I am reading, I don't consider that a loss, as it forces me to crystalize or sharpen my own thinking on the topic at hand.
I've found the achilles stretch pictured in the book to be very effective at relieving tendonitis. I like the reverse situps, too.
And as jag mentioned, the many pictures demonstrating what Yessis considers to be good running technique are very helpful.
it sucks.
