I never tried, but about 2-3 years after I was a middle school shoplifter who got busted then went clean and got into running instead of crime, I realized I could probably now easily rob the same store I got busted in quite easily (leaving aside that I'd probably be easily recognized).
When I used to shoplift at that store, it was about 1/4 to 1/2 mile uphill on the street to a trail system that I was highly familiar with. There were no K9 units so no dogs to worry about. As a high school junior, I could run 25.5, 55.0, 2:02, and 4:23. I had the leading times in the county in the 800m and 1600m, and there were no post-high-school runners that were any good in the area. I figured as long as the cop wasn't a sprinter, I could have easily gotten away. You have to figure you're gonna get at least a 2 second jump on them, plus if you were in running gear and they were in cop gear and shoes, they'd now have to run a 23 second 200 in the wrong gear to catch you, or a 52-53 second 400. Then, even if they caught you, you could be evasive and hard to grab just as they were running out of gas. Anything longer than 400m and I was already the fastest guy around, so they'd have no chance. Plus I'd be in the trail system and then simply vanish. Lots of exits in different directions and it ended up next to a golf course. I could vanish into the golf course and end up home in no time.
The problem with the scenario is that the town was small enough that a little investigative work would allow them to figure out who runs like a gazelle and I'd predict getting rounded up at cross country practice the next day. So I never even thought about stealing again though it was nice to know if SHTF I'd have a pretty good chance of grabbing some food and boogying out of there successfully. A couple years before that a hoodlum friend of mine convinced me to run out onto the 6th hole and steal someone's nicely driven ball from the middle of the fairway. It was quite embarrassing when one of my friends at school the next Monday asked me if I stole his dad's ball and said he recognized my running style. I wasn't even a runner yet but I guess my style was already famous. We both laughed and I told him to apologize for me to his dad (who was a cool MF) and that it was peer pressure from my other a$$hat friend.
