Hoping that Letsrun can still produce a real running conversation:
Assuming that money was not a constraint, how would you find the right super shoe for you during the 12-16 weeks of a marathon build-up (let’s assume you don’t have years to figure this out…)?
The Brojos & Gault are now saying “high responders” could cut 3-4 minutes off a marathon time. It seems like equipment selection is nearly as important as the actual marathon buildup.
The number of marathon super shoes has exploded (~20?). This explosion is seemingly matched by the number of random sites/youtubers that now have shoe reviews from hobby joggers that have zero credentials. I don’t find any of the reviews helpful. I also can’t sacrifice all of my workouts and quality long sessions to testing out shoes.
I’d especially find it helpful if anyone has a quantitative way of figuring it out vs. just going to the local shoe store and seeing which one “feels” the best.
Side notes: Mantz seemed to have lab-like tests to help him pick a shoe (from his Strava). On the opposite end, Sisson seemed to be toying between 2 shoes and decided based on a 4x2km small workout 7 days before the Chicago Marathon (from Molly Huddle’s Runner’s World Article).
