In the post race press conference, Emily said that she thought that she wasn’t on American Record pace because she figured there would be a camera on her if she was on AR pace.

Yeah have to think Gidey gets the WR in Valencia, and having the label as marathon world record holder is huge. Terrible coaching. The agent should've even known better.
reading the thread after the race, I wish there was a filter to remove all the non-substantive complaints; it'd be like a 4-page read.
You do realize no one at nbc chicago is reading this to consider your complaints?
It wasn't just NBC Chicago. The flotrack stream was also pretty bad even with no commercials or random interviews with people in the crowd. Maybe they were weren't given a choice of feeds from NBC though I'm not sure. At the end the commentators were frustrated they weren't showing sisson for some reason.
A copy of this broadcast needs to be made immediately and sent to the broadcast hall of shame.
They barely showed any of the WR and AR attempts int he women's races as they were so fucsed on world records. THen they haev no clock and had no idea if either record was going down.
I was barely watching the race as my 4 -year old and i were throwing the footblal in the room. I need a) the WR wasn't happening and b) the AR was happening. I calculated the 40k WR split and realize she was just 3 seconds ahead and woudln't get it. I then saw her at 400m to go a 2:13:04 and knew she wasn't running a 60.
Sisson was way way ahead. The announcers weren't sure. How about looking at your damn watch?
Jonathan gault says the broadcast has never been this bad. I think it's often this bad but he doens't realize it was he's in Chicago covering it live.
Sadly, the network(s) do not consider this an elite athletic competition in any way, shape or form. To them the Chicago marathon is more Macy’s Thanksgiving day parade than Olympic 1500 final. The elite competition is incidental. I don’t think this going to get better, only worse with time. Those in in a position to decide would probably laugh at our complaints otherwise. Rather than too little coverage and analysis of the elite races to humor a few of us geeks, they are probably complaining there is too much still. They want more heart warming stories about 5 hour hobby joggers and funny costumes.

It’s a quirk of road racing that elite competition occurs in the setting of a mass participation event. If you want serious focus, this needs to change. It’s like broadcasting super bowl as part of a simultaneous series of flag football games for little kids, the aged and the disabled.
In the post race press conference, Emily said that she thought that she wasn’t on American Record pace because she figured there would be a camera on her if she was on AR pace.
She also said that she didn't know what pace she was running until she crossed the line and asked her husband what her time what. What a mess.
But I wonder if it this actually helped her run faster. If she knew she was on 2:18:29 pace maybe she would have backed off a bit. Thinking you're going faster than American record pace could get in your head and make it feel harder than it is. Instead, she ran within herself off feel and got a massive PR.

Mentioned several times during broadcast that Chepngetich is self coached.
It’s an embarrassing that an American can’t run 2:06 on that course in ideal conditions. Don’t give me East African genetics because the Japanese have no problem. American men are just pathetic.
They should have more flat marathons like Chicago and focus on fast times.
American men are no longer in contention by the time they get to Central Park in the New York City Marathon -- the Central Park section of the race is only the last two miles, and it's not the part of Central Park with the largest hills.
The American men, again, are usually long gone before then anyway...
American men just need to get better, at risk of stating the obvious.
Has Frank Lara been picking Stinson's brain for tactical advice?
You get so few perfect days and to blow it by going out in 63:45. On a day when even Hanson's guys were running under 2:10 this was potentially a 2:09 day for Lara until he tried to run 2:07. For a guy who will probably only get one contract in this sport, a really bad decision.

Giving the splits is more important when they are uneven, because the change in the project time is based on the average pace, while the time to the finish is more closely track by using the 'marginal' pace of the last split. In addition, giving the splits lets you see how quickly the pace is slipping. If it is, it is likely that the next split is even slower. Of course, things like hills and wind also make a difference, but then the splits go up and down. I am guess that some of Emily's variation is caused by the wind. Someone made a useful comment about the wind getting better the last several kilometers, and the time from 35K to the finish was her best.
Thanks to all that made race comments. Why do people have to make half the comments about the wheelchair broadcast time, almost all of them are redundant.
Actually, she kind of did sacrifice the gift. If she'd run remotely sane splits, she would've broken 2:13. She threw a WR away by going out at freaking 2:07 pace.
Solid debut for Mantz. Smartest race I've ever seen him rub. 1:03:45 is right where he wanted to be at half, but just didn't quite have the fitness to keep it up. Surprised me he couldn't get under 2:08 in fantastic conditions. Maybe if he had a pack to race with instead of being on an island with Frank Lara.
'On an island?' What are you talking about? He had a pack of 6 to 10 guys with him for most of the race, and was tailing Hosoya all the way to the end.

Was she wearing a watch? Were there not big clocks along the course, at the very least at halfway?
