I've said it in other threads, and I'll say it again here: The Adios Pro 3 is the successor to the OG/FK and Next% v1 Vaporflies. An amazing cushioned and bouncy ride sitting on top of an absolute slingshot of a carbon plate (OK, rods).
I have no idea what Nike did to their midsole between v1 and v2 of the VF/AF. Maybe they tinkered with the pebax formula to make it more resilient to wear so it would last longer. Maybe they tried to increase $ margins by starting to mix in a little of the recycled midsole material that they are touting in some of their 100% recycled Zoom X shoes (ZF5 and new Peg Turbo). Whatever it is, the new versions are much stiffer and less bouncy/forgiving that the first gen. The new midsole feels more like a midway point between original ZoomX and their classic React foam. I can even feel a difference between the first and second generation Invincibles. And the worst part is that the foam doesn't actually seem to last any longer than it did first time around.
I get that pros love them, because they are still plenty responsive and quite firm, so they feel like a racing flat. But the hobby jogger magic is gone.
It's possible people have such massive filters about Nike being top dog from the last 3-5 years that it will take a lot longer for other shoes to be widely considered as a replacement for the VF/AF juggernaut. I would definitely encourage anyone that was underwhelmed by the overengineered AF2 (or alternately, VF runners that feel the new shoe is too firm) to take a look at the AP3. I've repped Nike to the tune of OG VF, FK VF, VF N%1 x 3, AF N%1 x 2, and VF N%2 x 2 (plus many other pairs of Peg Turbos, N% Tempos, and Invincibles), but I'm on the three stripes for now.
