Very nice that all the acres of pretty blue panels provided power. But where are they going to grow food to eat if a worse geophysical event occurs or war destroys the infrastructure and it can't be shipped in?

This best-selling solar panel generator is your “Magic Bullet” to protect you from blackouts, power failures & the crumbling electric grid. Use the Patriot Power Generator inside your home — to power a fridge, freezer, medica...
I've looked at those "generators" and they are pretty much a joke. They cost about the same as the Honda EU2200i (and way more than a 2000 watt Harbor Freight generator), and only have about 1500 Watt-Hours of capacity, which is pretty small. Charge time (in ideal conditions) is from 8 to 13 hours depending on the model.

All the power lines in Babcock are buried. That's why they didn't lose power, not because of the solar panels.
Where does Babcock's electricity come from at night?
From their website, it imports electricity from the grid at night and exports excess electricity to the grid when the sun shines for a net zero energy consumption from the grid.
Sounds like the section of the grid Babcock is linked to didn't lose electricity either (regardless of the type of electricity generation). This is a non-story.
Thats nice for new infrastructure. Nobody will pay to upgrade older infrastructure because the costs are too great to overcome even if a natural disaster knocks it out for awhile. Not to mention that underground service is also very slow and expensive.
I just looked this up. Babcock Ranch is 33' above sea level. The highest part of Ft Myers is 27' elevation, but most of the city is much less. Large areas are less than 20' above sea level and most of the are within 10 miles of the beach are only 10' above sea level. That's another reason why Babcock Ranch had less flooding than Ft. Myers.
50,000 residents is the future end goal. This article from today states ~4,600 residents which seems in line with the number of developments visible in google maps.
Charlotte County, Florida, was knocked "off the grid" because of Hurricane Ian. But one community within it known as "the world's first solar-powered town" never lost power or internet – only a few shingles and some downed tr...
