What the top 4 boys teams can do to improve / how they can get to NXN (with an at large or by auto-qualifying).
Newbury Park - I would be surprised if they don’t qualify. To keep other teams from challenging for an NXN title, Sahlman needs to do better than he did last year and their 4/5 need to step up.
San Clemente - needs to close their 3-5 gap to secure their NXN berth.
Granada - have their number 2/3 guys get closer to their number 1 like in track. And have their 4-7 be on. If they can do that they can challenge San Clemente. But they are in different divisions so the NXN qualification depends on the merged state meet results.
This team is 7-deep and there is a junior on JV trying to steal a varsity spot this year. This keeps all 7 of their varsity guys from being complacent about their spot.
Great Oak - unfortunately they are the least likely of these to qualify unless there are 2 at larges which is unlikely, maybe even one at-large is not guaranteed based on how good regions like Midwest and Northwest are now. But I predict that there will be at least 1 at large team here.
BUT….don’t count this team out just yet (for finishing second or third in the merge) …..
Ramses Cortes needs to start racing again and try to beat Granada’s/San Clemente’s #1. Not sure if he can get back to being in that kind of shape.
And also their 2-7 guys need to finish better than at Clovis.
Those guys were in second at Mile 1. But after that, they died down and placed 4th. Maybe this pack needs to race the first mile in a smarter way?
if Great oak wins state and sneaks in to NXN that’s good for the program because this varsity team has 5 seniors and this year it is very much looking to be the last year they win state and go to NXN
hopefully at least Granada qualifies. They never have before and the varsity team has 6 seniors.
