Thanks for posting, I am now much less impressed with UVA's performance. Mike Smith in 5th, Milt in 25th.

What, this literally makes it look more impressive. There were 4 top 10 teams at NCAAs in that race and 4 top 10 individuals, including the individual champion Keith Kelly. Different conditions and race I know, but UVAs times would have won or got 2nd in that race, just eyeballing that
Keep in mind this is now 2022 and the 100th best 5k last year was 13:46 and the 200th best 5k time was 13:58. 217 people broke 14.
They are now running cross country in super spikes. Training methods are better, nutrition is better.
He has a young group that's going to struggle with 10k.

Super spikes are irrelevant for XC. Nutrition is not magically better over the last 20 years either. You can compare UVAs times to the last few year of "better training methods" and compare

I am not sure what this is supposed to prove? So a month later in the season, the eventual 3rd place NCAA team had 3 guys under 24 at Franklin. UVA placed 7 under 24 in a season opener and we are wrong for wondering if they are a top 10 team?
If Lananna thought they had a chance in November, they would have traveled to Oklahoma to compete on that course and to see how they compared to the other teams currently.
They didn't do that though, so regardless of their chances, Lananna doesn't have the confidence to think they'll do well, and that's not a good sign for them.
He's probably just trying to create a good early impression for UVA because he knows they don't do well in November.
I'd have a much better impression of them if they'd at least gone there and finished in the top half dozen.
What will they place at ACC on their home course? They aren’t beating Notre Dame. Maybe they beat Wake Forest because they were pretty close. So MAYBE they get 2nd or 3rd. Not likely top 10 at ncaa. 15th to 25th. Big range I know.

They might not qualify for NCAAs. They have ZERO wins over any teams that might qualify.
They need a lot of things to go in their favorite in order to qualify. They left it 100% up to chance.

Vin Lananna is a terrible coach; doesn’t know what he’s doing; and his athletes won’t amount to anything. Right . . .
Who would have thought taking all scholarships away from track and putting them into distance at a top 10 school nationally would make the cross country team good...
