I mentioned before that I have microtia (look it up). But I still want to be a doctor. Should I mention it during my interview, and spin it in a way that I already have a solution (amplified stethoscopes), or not mention it because it can hurt my chances of getting in?
First of all is it unilateral or bilateral microtia? if it is unilateral microtia then I don’t think it’s really an issue because it doesn’t affect your life in any way and in that case I don’t think it needs to be mentioned. Even if it is bilateral microtia and it doesn’t affect your life then it also does not need to be mentioned.
People with severe myopia (shortsightedness) who apply to be medical doctors don’t mention their severe myopia and it doesn’t stop them from becoming successful medical doctors so it shouldn’t be any different with your condition, which usually affects hearing to some degree with some hearing loss evident.
Have you had surgery for your condition or are you thinking about having it? In the United States, if you only have mild hearing loss in one ear, it is not considered a disability, and they do not give out disability compensation.
I agree with this because it is a very selective process and the people in the selection process could use it against you theoretically and select someone else so there’s no need to mention it.
I actually would mention it - as an example of something difficult you have overcome in your life to reach for your goals. Microtia does affect your hearing but I assume you have made accommodations such as amplification to get to where you are now.
There is no reason you can’t be a physician because of hearing loss. It’s actually against the law to discriminate due to a medical disability.
Good luck to you. I remember my first medical school interview 34 years ago. You will nail it!
That’s right. Just like when you’re asked a question by the surgeon in a procedure. Do not give “extra” information. Do not give talk. Do not offer up more than is asked.
Depending on the context, it could work against you (victim). BTW, I don't have that condition but I do use amplified stethoscope, they are awesome and everyone who uses one should.
Forget the disability. Just mention that you are 1% Cherokee and you are in regardless of your disability. Heck, you may even end up winning a seat in the US Senate some day.

What’s the worst that could happen if you don’t mention it?
