Why are all these people trying to create fanboy super-teams? Nobody should transfer unless they have an academic reason to do it, or they have a falling out with the team the picked.
The NBA trashed the competitiveness of their league by allowing super-teams to be created. College is doing the same thing with football and NIL. Let's not ruin cross country and track by gossiping about creating super-teams. The only reason to have a league is so that there is a semblance of fairness, and fanboy-gossip-LeBronJames-superteams will hurt the sport.
Depends on how many distance allocated scholarships he has to work with. My guess is not many. So better for him to recruit under the radar guys and develop them over 4 years.
On Friday, Newbury Park distance star Aaron Sahlman announced that he had narrowed his college choices down to Arkansas, Northern Arizona, Oklahoma and UCLA.
And Rocco Culpepper. I heard he’s going to Newbury Park when he’s a senior (when all of his studly class of 2025 teammates like Gavin, kye and keeghan will be in college)
By Tim Casey - MileSplit Recruiting Reporter - - - On Friday, Newbury Park distance star Aaron Sahlmanannounced that he had narrowed his college choices down to Arkansas, Northern Arizona, Oklahoma and UCLA. All four programs would love to convince Sahlman to sign a National Letter of Intent to their universities, as he will likely make an immediate impact at the NCAA Division 1 level. Sahlman is ranked seventh in MileSplit's boys recruiting rankings for the Class of 2023. But just why is he so coveted? Sahlman was sixth at last year's Garmin RunningLane Cross Country Championships in 14:14.38 on that fast John Hunt Park 5K course. His brother, Colin Sahlman, won that race, while teammates and twins Leo and Lex Young finished second and third, respectively. The Sahlman and Young brothers shattered the 4xmile high school national record in March at the New Balance Indoor Nationals, running 16:29.31, which was more than a half-minute faster than the old record of 17:01.81. Colin, MileSplit's boys Athlete of the Year for cross country and Gatorade's Male Athlete of the Year, is now a freshman at Northern Arizona, while the Young brothers are seniors at Newbury Park who committed to Stanford in August. Aaron may not get as much hype as his brother or the Youngs, but he's not too far behind. He has personal bests times of 1:48.91 in the outdoor 800m, 4:01.34 in the outdoor mile, 8:01.72 in the indoor 3,000m and 8:48.28 in the outdoor 3,200m. Here's a look (in alphabetical order) at the four programs he's considering and how he would fit in with each school. From 1984 to 2000, the Razorbacks won the NCAA title 11 times in 17 years, which is still the most dominant stretch any program has had since the NCAA began hosting championship meets in 1938. But since 2000, Arkansas' best NCAA finish was second in 2005. The men's team has since fallen back in the pack. Still, the Razorbacks are still nationally relevant. They were fourth at last year's NCAA meet behind Northern Arizona, Iowa State and Oklahoma State. The Razorbacks' top four runners from last year's NCAA meet are no longer on the team, but they are ranked 15th in the latest coaches poll. Arkansas has some talented young runners, including sophomore Patrick Kiprop from Kenya and redshirt freshman Ben Shearer from Texas, who finished second and sixth at the Chile Pepper XC Festival on Sept. 30. Chris Bucknam, head coach of the Razorbacks' men's cross country and track programs since 2008, has recruited across the world for distance runners. This year's 12-man cross country roster has runners from Arkansas, Iowa, Georgia, Texas and Washington as well as Germany and Kenya. If Arkansas can sign Sahlman, he would give the Razorbacks their most highly-decorated domestic distance recruit in a long time and could make them a team to watch in the coming years. Northern Arizona University After Sahlman posted his final four colleges on Friday, his brother Colin responded, writing: "Awesome list, I'll be happy for you no matter what you choose! "But come to NAU." Brotherly connection aside, it's easy to see what has drawn Sahlman to Northern Arizona. The Lumberjacks are the premier men's cross country program, having won the last two NCAA titles and five of the past six. The only other teams in history with that type of run are UTEP, which won six titles in seven years from 1975 to 1981, and Arkansas, which won five titles in six years from 1990 to 1995. Besides Colin, Northern Arizona's roster includes another Newbury Park alum: Nico Young. Young was the Gatorade national cross country and track Player of the Year as a high school senior in 2019-20. Young has had no problem adjusting to college, placing fourth at the 2020 NCAA cross country met (which was held in March 2021) and finishing 11th at the 2021 NCAA meet. Young was also third in the 5,000m at the 2022 NCAA indoor and outdoor track meets. He's in contention for an NCAA title this cross country season, too. Northern Arizona coach Mike Smith has consistently had one of the best recruiting classes in the country, so with his success and the family connection, it would not be surprising if Sahlman ends up running for the Lumberjacks. University of Oklahoma Oklahoma is the most unlikely school to be in Sahlman's top four. The Sooners are not ranked in the latest coaches poll and they have not made the NCAA Championships since 2015, when they finished 15th in the 31-team field. If Sahlman decides on Oklahoma, he could be the school's top cross country runner next fall and would join a team that is transitioning from the Big 12 to SEC by 2025. Oklahoma's coaching staff is relatively new to the school. Tim Langford was named head track and cross country coach in May 2020, while Hannah Fields was hired as the associate head cross country coach and assistant track coach for distance events in August 2021. Fields was previously a volunteer assistant coach at Oklahoma State and helped the Cowboys place third at the 2020 NCAA Cross Country Championships. Fields, who was known as Hannah Helker as a runner, also competed as a professional in the 800, and 1,500m for Brooks and competed in the 2016 Olympic Trials. She could serve as a mentor to Sahlman and use her experience to help him improve. University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) From a location and familiarity standpoint, UCLA makes the most sense for Sahlman. Sahlman's high school, Newbury Park, is about 40 miles west of UCLA's campus and his high school coach, Sean Brosnan, was named in late July as the coach of the Bruins' cross country team and will be an assistant on its outdoor track and field program. Brosnan had coached at Newbury Park since 2016 and led the boys team to the 2019 Team Nationals title and the 2021 Garmin RunningLane Cross Country Championships title. At UCLA, he took over a program that has struggled in recent years and last made the NCAA meet in 2017 when the Bruins finished 21st in the 31-team field. Brosnan is surely focusing on Sahlman as a priority recruit. What he's got going for him? He's already helped make Sahlman one of the country's top high school runners in recent memory. And besides the fit from a running perspective, it probably doesn't hurt that UCLA has a beautiful campus in Los Angeles' tony Westwood neighborhood and is an elite academic school. It's tied for 20th in the U.S. News & World Report rankings.
One of Southlake Carroll alums (Antonio Florcruz) goes to and runs for University of Oklahoma. He’s been on varsity for Southlake Carroll since SOPHOMORE YEAR. The truth hurts, man.
Yeah wtf? They've only got 1 sub 25 guy on their roster this year, Aaron could probably tempo that. Either the UO coach offered him $100k/year in NIL money or he's actually looking at Ok State and he really messed up announcing it.
And Rocco Culpepper. I heard he’s going to Newbury Park when he’s a senior (when all of his studly class of 2025 teammates like Gavin, kye and keeghan will be in college)
He changed his mind. He will stay at niwot all 4 years. But he will still probably consider UCLA
