Sage was a beast and he did ok in college. But yeah XC is about getting the above average talent to reach their potential. Not many 1500 student schools are going to have 5 sub 9 runners. But pretty much all of them could have that many 9:30 runners. That's a pretty competive XC team. Hit the year with a couple of talented kids who can run 9:00 and your a nationally competive team. And every decade or two you will get that 8:50 runner..
But most schools don't put in the work so those 9:30 kids run 10:00.
Newbury Park had 5 guys under 9 minutes last spring 2 of them are in college now They also have a 9:02 back And gained a sub-9 senior transfer from Florida I sure hope senior Martinez (9:10) returns for track Senior Cantu ran a 9:21 last spring
If you followed the link provided it explains how York has only had maybe a few blue chip runners in the last 22 years. Most of the guys were not scholarship runners. Your perception of "great" is pretty wide. I can tell you guys who run 9:10-9:15 are not "great". No Footlockers winners, only MacNamara won the first NXN meet and he did pretty well at Michigan.

However, 9:30 runners succeed at D1, maybe not even D2. College is a whole new game and you realize how tough the competition is. You're going against elites, foreign runners, red shirts. When you look at the NCAA results, most of those guys in the top 50 were studs, even 9:00 guys in high school find themselves mid packers.

Ben Foltz of Bolles has run low 14's and now trains for triathalons. I believe his does a lot of his training with Trevor Foley, who has been climbing up the Ironman rankings.

OK??? NCAA 1500 champ, 10 time All-American, 2 NCAA xc team titles, placed 7th in the 2004 Olympic Trials, 2nd in USATF xc, 60th at Worlds xc.
Cheserek never made an Olympic or World team...was he just ok?

He ran 2s faster than HS mile time. That isn't much improvement... Compare that to cheserek who dropped like 20s off his mile.... And there aren't many Americans who would make any Kenyan Olympic teams. I sure would have bet on Rupp running a 10k at altitude....
But yes he is the HS super star you expect to take the next step. The gap between him and some 4:15 guy is huge....

Jesus...read between the lines. I wasn't comparing him to Chez only showing how ridiculous your comment of Sage being "ok" is.
If he didn't improve much how the hell did he place 6th and 7th in NCAA cross and get 2nd at USATF, beating Alan Webb, btw.
Most collegians only run the mile indoors. He ran 3:39m outdoors, he also went 7:54m indoors which is 8:30 converted, 15 seconds faster than his 8:45.
Your competitve record is what counts and Sage was right there collegiately and nationally.
