Fifty years apart, quite similar. Jakob in Euros: Closes in 5:05 over the final 2000 meters, for a 13:21 victory. Viren in Olympics: Closes in 5:06 over the final 2000 meters, for a 13:26 victory.
Here is Spain’s leading sports newspaper. I will review the main points about Katir in the next post.
In the article there’s no mention of the Frenchman and the small tussle and complaint by the Frenchman after the race. Katir mentioned in the article that he thought 25 people in the final of the 5000 m was not well thought out and he believed it would have been better to have two semi finals and have a reduced field in the final. He said that throughout the race in the early laps there was a lot of pushing, shoving and elbowing - again without mentioning the Frenchman. He said he was satisfied with the outcome of the race.
Appreciate the share. It’s fair to say his form was down a bit from inside to outdoor but post-COVID seems like the bigger downturn which has been a theme with some athletes.

the number is probably too large. there are different solutions, and I don't think more rounds are necessary. They want the Jakob's of the world to double, and this increases the chances of that happening.
1. if you think the field is too big, go to the front and stretch out the field. pick your poison.
2. this is the easiest way to do it: just have a tougher qualifying standard. perhaps an auto qualifying time, and then a provisional qualifying time that might get you in IF you are top 16 or whatever they deem the appropriate number to be.

Behind, Katir, who this year had focused on the 1,500 with the excellent result of world bronze, once again demonstrated the competitive quality he has to move in the group at the right time and attack the favorite to seal a European silver with the closing a magical year.
...
In this boisterous tactical fight for the top positions, a fall, that of Frenchman Bour, caused panic among the favourites, who came out unscathed but with the determination to speed up the race. There, the Italian Crippa, European bronze from Berlin in 2018, Katir and Ingebrigtsen himself got to work.
...
With 800 meters to go, it was the Norwegian who once again took on the leader's stripes with the desire to seal his first gold with the comfort he did not have in the 1,500 World Championships. But there Katir, ambitious, decided to stand up to him. "I knew that the only one who could face Ingebrigtsen was me," admitted the Spaniard. "I went with that mentality, that if he has to beat me he has to suffer."

Miruts Yifter, if he were in the race would have Kicked Six Different Kinds of Dog Sh!t Out of Viren.
a bit of a random question but do decathletes train 1500 that much, or at all? seems like most of them are sprinter types – which is of course natural as most events favor "fast twitch guys"
They might do one aerobic session a fortnight, maybe 1 a week in winter. You would do a bit for a 400. But remember they are built for power in 8 events, speed endurance in 1, an aerobic in 1.
Sparse crowd tonight. Lots of Field but not much track action. Better program tomorrow night with Jakob coming back in 1500 Final along with a rematch of 10K women facing off in 5K Final.
Damn, Asier Martinez's season has been a dream. WC bronze out of nowhere and now European champ. What a way to step up.
Also, nice to see Wilma Murto get past her struggles at champs. She's the world junior record holder but was only able to get a bronze medal at the World Junior Champs and then again at the European Junior Champs and has never really been able to move on from the mark that she set when she was a teen. This definitely seems like it might be a changing point for her.

No need to remind him. He stated that most events favor fast twitch guys so he's well aware.
