Do they just have contracts to run out? They’ll never win anything. I guess this applies to anyone really who, after college, it becomes clear they’re not gonna make it.

Maybe because they enjoy it.
I thought AE hung it up a few weeks ago. At least, that's what I read here.
That’s their identity probably. All their life is based around training racing etc
If that's the case, and she is retired, I hope the great high school-to pro experiment is now concluded.
What did we learn? The chances of finding success going straight to pro are likely the same if not worse than going to the NCAA. At least with the NCAA you can be a part of a team and have a fun and whole college experience. So choose the NCAA and make sure it's a good team and a healthy environment.
No hate on Alexa. Just never understood why she turned pro as a senior in high school. She was the best HS runner at the time, sure, but she seemed to like her teammates and coaches. She gave up her final year with them to find herself in no man's land as a pro because as good as she was as an HSer, she still wasn't globally competitive.
People sort of followed Mary's footsteps because they saw how much she improved after just one year. Now that we have more years to follow, we kind of know that this doesn't work very well in the long run. Mary was definitely mistreated (some would say abused) by Salazar. But it is ALSO true that Mary wasn't emotionally mature enough to be a pro athlete yet (who is as a teenager?!).
I wonder how things would have shaped up if both chose healthy collegiate environments to compete in rather than turn pro right away. Maybe the exact same. Maybe different. Jordan was a collegiate athlete and look how things turned out for her. But at least she ran 2:20.
Why people like MrMojack like posting troll threads?
alberto is a feminist. he didn't treat them like girls, he treated them like athletes. figuring out that guys and girls are different is sometimes a hard lesson to learn.
Jordan was not a real 2:20 by any stretch. All signs pointed to 2:30, less 5 mins for pro-advantages, and possible affinity for the marathon - 2:25 at best.
Think of it this way. You suck at your job. No one likes you and they talk bad about you all the time. Yet your employer still pays you. Jordan and Alexa don't suck as bad as you. Why wouldn't they continue doing a job they love when there's people out there like you who suck at their job?
This post was removed.
Getting paid for something you really like to do. Nothing wrong with that.
The same reason you and I keep running.
Alberto Salazar was an abusive prick to Mary Cain; are you saying that's a prerequisite for treating someone like an athlete? They are not the same thing and I honestly hope you are nowhere near coaching any young women.
Just to add to this, there is a psychological component to it. Tuohy ran 4:06 and 15:18. This year she won multiple conference titles, an NCAA title, and had 2 runner up finishes, establishing herself as one of the best (if not the best) in the NCAA. But had she turned pro, we would have all scoffed at those times and said she wasn't gaining any ground because those times just don't hold up in the pro running scene.
There was a point where Alexa, who was college age, ran 1500 times that would have won her an NCAA title. But because she was pro, they didn't really make any splash. So instead of gaining confidence and accolades, Alexa probably just felt like she was treading water.
The NCAA is that perfect middle ground between high school and pro for anyone. It Katelyn has more success, it will prove this point more.
This isn't the first time high school xc coach has been told to stay away from female athletes. I'm guessing it won't be the last.
If he treated the men the way he treated the women it's not a good thing. Here's a not-so comprehensive list of the way Alberto treated his female athletes.
--created an arbitrary weight goal that was near impossible for 5'7" athlete to hit, and insisted the athlete hit that goal even though there was no (say it again) NO evidence that there would be any performance gain.
--made an athlete sign a contract that they would not be "friends" with anyone on the team.
--Gave athletes prescription drugs for which they did not have prescriptions for in order to lose weight.
--proven sexual abuse.
--hired a fake psychologist who told him all of his athlete's secrets.
--ignored a teenage athlete's self harm
--had an outburst in front of an entire track meet yelling at an athlete saying "clearly you gained five pounds because you had bacon and eggs for your pre-race meal!" (if you think this is just tough coaching, you might want to consider that no one gains five pounds because they had bacon and eggs one time. So if you're going to be a tough coach at least be factually accurate).
--gave athletes thyroid meds, and insisted they take them even though it was making them sick (he did this to his best friend's daughter in law).

You’re an idiot.
Hopefully you don’t adolescent girls.
hopefully you nerds can tell the difference between coaching hs and coaching professionals.

OK groomer.

So sexual abuse is ok if they’ve JUST graduated HS?
Go take a long hard look in the mirror oddball.
college isn’t for everyone. I know you had fun being a part of Zappa Kazaa opa or whatever.. but some people would prefer to make some real cash right out the gate. I would take the money right away if I had that kind of talent.
