Some people did bash him, probably largely because he is in Jerry's group and because of Shelby. More generally, there was mild criticism of race tactics and of time trialing instead of racing, which I think are fair points. GF has had a great year which must be looked at as a tremendous success overall. I think the fact that people have higher expectations of him than what he achieved should be viewed as a compliment; we know he is great and he's right on the edge of the final breakthrough that makes him a guy who could challenge for gold and not a guy hoping to get lucky to kick into the medals, or as a guy who can run for wins instead of hanging on and hoping to PR/AR.
I do think the 3000m AR is still weak, but I think GF can push this down a couple more seconds. Not sure he has the pure speed to take it down to Bekele levels but time will tell. Maybe this will be Hobbs' AR a few years from now...?
