Indian athlete Avinash Sukund Sable almost takes the gold in the Commonwealth Games steeple final! That was thrilling.
India is seriously up and coming in track and field.

As they should. With a talent pool of a billion plus people to pick from, and stars like Chopra reigniting interest in the sport, Indian track stars in the mid to distant future is inevitable.
He made it a great race and I thought he would take it on the last water jump. Seemed like a tough race, not sure what happened to Kipruto
Kibiwott wanted it fast to take out Kipruto’s kick. Sable went with the pace and almost stole gold. .05!
Was looking at India's performances before the steeplechase started because it felt they were doing unusually well, but looks like they've been picking up field medals regularly over the last half dozen CWGs.
But this is the individual track medal since a bronze in the women's 10000m in 2010.
What's the background of India's athletes? Are they middle-class kids from fee-paying schools? Are they home-grown or NCAA-nurtured?
That's the beauty of CWGs. Don't forget Jamaica won gold in the women's steeple at the last one.
India pops up with some decent athletes and then they get busted for drugs, that seems to be the cycle.
Some years ago I believe there was a statistical analysis that put India as number one in doping rate across all sports.
I'm Indian and this is most definitely not true at all.
many of them are from dirt poor backgrounds, and theyre not ncaa trained.
Sable has a 1:00:30 Half marathon from 2020 New Delhi which was not registered so he’s more of a distance guy. He also ran 1325 for 5000 m in April in California but going by today’s results when he finished second in the steeple chase in Commonwealth games I might guess that he’s worth around 1310 to 1312 5000 m.
Sable has been coached by and training with Scott Simmons' group in Colorado Springs. Looks like the best steeple group there is. Not surprised he could challenge Kenya's best if he trains like those guys do.

Tejaswin Shankar is the one Indian athlete I can think of in these CWG to have been a NCAA athlete. He got a high jump bronze after winning the NCAA outdoor championships this year.
Truly remarkable

It would be interesting to know what the Indian athlete, Avinash Sable, is worth now for 1500 m which is often a key marker to 3000 m steeplechase progress. I’m guessing that he would be worth, at this juncture, at least 3:39 (at best) to 3:45 (at worst). Once again, he appears to be more of a strength guy than speed guy.
Bold double attempt for Avinash Sable and John Gay (4th in the steeple in the morning), lining up for the 5000m in the evening session. Mixed results though, DNF for Sable and a PB for Gay, impressed that they gave it a go.
Sable’s background is interesting, as a child he used to run/walk 6km back and forth to school every day, supposedly. He was born into a family of farmers.
he only starting running 6 yrs ago while he was in the Indian army
Ghost (of course) picked up on his talent years ago when he ran a half in 60 min and change.
He’s 27 but not has been running that long…barring injury he has good chance of running faster yet and contending seriously in the next Olympics.
