Obvious untruths and twisting in these posts. Government jobs are required to run government programs, things that NO private company would or should ever do; things like planning and managing infrastructure, enforcing regulations and collecting taxes, enforcing laws, engaging in spy craft, maintaining the national aerospace system, etc. etc. People who b-tch about government jobs have NO clue what they are talking about.
Second, good government jobs are some of the ONLY ones left that actually provide decent wages and benefits. The private sector has been happy to let its people become gig-wage-slaves without any pensions and it's not going to be long before all of us will be asked to pay for that through enhanced social security and the like. A pension that is offered as part of a compensation package is NEVER overpromised. It is a part of the package, something that employees build their entire life plan around for decades. Executives should go to prison when pensions fall apart. Of course, in the good 'ole USofA, executives and capitalists always come out just fine while the working and middle classes eat sh-t.
Last, the US offers the most meager social safety net and the worst, most expensive medical system in the western world, AND some of the lowest overall taxes. Our tax system has also become increasingly regressive as the affluent tend to pay at FAR lower overall rates than the working and middle classes. I would MUCH rather pay more taxes and enjoy the level of benefits, pension and medical system offered in ANY European country. It's a damned shame that awful puritanism and unbridled capitalistic ugliness have never been brought to heel in the US.
