Coburn, Frerichs, and Schweizer are ripped as a *result* of their training. It's laughable to think they would have the same physique if they weren't professional athletes.
Lets be real. Calorie restriction has a *much much* larger impact on bodyfat and being ripped than training. I love running but this part of the sport makes me hate it

Training like an athlete > straving yourself
Many people underestimate the impact of training on body composition. When your a pro runner, training for 3+ hours/day, running, cross training and lifting weights, you are going to get very lean in response to the strong training stimulus. Heavy training allows you to be extremely lean, despite not having the best diet. For example, Michael Phelps consumed 10000 calories/day but was absolutely shredded at 5% body fat. Not all of the food he was eating was "healthy". It definitely wasn't his diet that was making him so lean, it was because of crazy swim workouts.
Other sports train hours a day too and don't have this problem. Phelps had muscle mass which burns calories. I eat more than most elite runners and don't train as much. 3 hours a day is what, an extra 2000 calories at best. Not hard to eat.
Ryan Hall even said he eats more now than he did than when he ran 20mi+ per day. I won't mention other names as I want to be respectful. Letsrun has lots of threads on this topic so its just an ugly part of the sport and we all know it exists.
IMO, it isn’t so much she is overweight… But that she seems tk have almost zero lean muscle mass. Even back in the day, it looked like she did zero lifting.

That definitely was a huge part of the problem. Instead of being pushed by Salazar towards extreme caloric restriction and unhealthy weight loss, Mary Cain should have been doing a body recomposition, partaking in frequent resistance training alongside running and cross training. This in would allow her to naturally get leaner, despite little change in weight. Not would this have improved her running performance but also significantly improved her resistance to injury. Eating enough to allow for energy balance along with doing regular strength training would enhance bone mass and density, which very likely would have prevented the stress fractures she experienced.
The reason why Mary Cain developed five stress fractures is from not having enough energy to support both health and performance. When you are an aggressive caloric deficit, the body's ability to recover and absorb the training stimulus is compromised. Not surprisingly this makes injuries much more likely, lacking sufficient calories/nutrients to promote tissue repair. Additionally, being in substantial negative energy balance can trigger ammenohea being as another major contributing to the stress fractures Mary Cain experienced.
Where were these women when this was happening? Mary herself claimed her female teammates witnessed it but none of them came out publicly and said it was wrong until after the fact. The day it happened every last one of them should have stood up to him and stood up for her.
If my boss starts to ridicule any of my coworkers, let alone a child, I will have it out with them then and there. Not wait for an expose about them.
The threat of being fired will cause many fantasies of bravery to back down wimpering in a corner.
This. Most companies are at will and will let you go at a moment's notice.

yep. and that was Salazar's fault. So much for greatest coach ever.
For the powerless, strength is defined by your ability to take it on the chin, to obey, to accept bulling put your nose down and work harder. See: USA women's gymnasts.
For the powerful, strength is defined by your ability to yell, scream, bully, demean and dole out orders. For example, that's why Trump was viewed as a tough guy even through he's quite fragile.
That's why when the powerless (athletes) speak up, it's seen as "weak and whiny". That's why we lament the end of "tough coaching" when really, abusive people are being held accountable.
The mary cain case REALLY touched a nerve...with certain men.
I am fascinated by this. Overwhelmingly the people who are dismissive, minimizing, and willing to cast Mary as a "whiner" are men. The people who are willing to roll their eyes and say things like "she couldn't handle tough coaching!" and "she was fat anyways" are men. Overwhelmingly the people who defend Alberto as simply a tough-guy coach instead of abusive...are men.
Most of the women I know in the sport strongly felt that the Mary Cain story resonated with them. That's why there was a mini "me too" movement in sports. Because women, not Mary Cain alone, but women, felt like they too were picked apart unnecessarily for their weight, and suffered as a result. They wanted a change.
This isn't a case of "girls can't handle tough coaching!" one can argue that what Mary Cain did was VERY tough and showed her strength just as you argue it showed her need to blame.
And in case anyone needs a refresher, here is a list of allegations against Salazar.
--Amy Yoder Begley said Salazar made her sign a document saying she won't be friends with her teammates
--Amy Yoder Begly was criticized, and called names for her weight frequently, especially her a**. Amy Yoder Begley, a grown adult came forward after the Cain allegations to note this happened.
--Mary Cain was given laxatives and birth control pills for which she did not have a prescription for to lose weight.
--Mary Cain was berated in front of an entire track meet for "gaining five pounds" because she had bacon and eggs for her pre-race meal. This isn't how you gain five pounds, btw so not accurate.
--Mary Cain was criticized for her weight even though she was performing well. Despite getting second to Jenny at USA's, she was forced to stay home and from competing because Alberto thought she was too heavy.
--There is 0 evidence that the 114 pound weight goal they set for Mary would be beneficial. Zero. Evidence. How's that for your favorite mad scientist coach?
--Alberto sexually abused an athlete, Larry Nassar style and has been found guilty of that too.
It's nothing new. To be an elite runner you probably have to cut calories or don't have the best relationship w/food. We (runners) all know it just not all admit it. There it is. She is correct!
This is just not true. Elite runners need to consume a ton of food to support recovery from their training. Restricting food while you train hard can actually slow your metabolism down and funnily enough you won't be any lighter than if you were giving your body the food it needs.
