On the boys side I think the order of Colorado teams will be:
1. Niwot. Has a great coach and they always reload now. They lost their #1 and 2 but last year’s 7th runner (Haug) had the fastest 3200 time of all the returners. They return 4 seniors from varsity and also have 3 up-and-coming sophomores who will possibly carry the team to a national championship in 2024.
2. Mountain Vista. First off, Dalby is a great coach. Don’t be fooled by the fact that they lost 5 varsity seniors. You have to look at who they return. They return 4 guys who ran under 16 minutes. 14:59, 15:29, 15:32, and 15:54. A 15:39 top 5 average. 2 of those sub-16 guys ran in the lower race at RunningLane. I’m sure that with how Mountain Vista runs their program they can find a really good #5.
3. Cherokee Trail. They return every single one of their scorers including their top dog Hunter Strand. 15:57 5K average.
4. Valor Christian. After last season ended they looked like they were going to be the #1 team in the state this year. That was until Ty Garrett transferred. They also got a new coach. Now they only return 3 varsity guys. They need a #4 and #5 to step up to have some kind of chance at being the #1 team in the state. But they will only have one senior and one junior so look for them to continue to improve unless some of their top guys transfer out.
Any of the top 3 teams can be #1 in the state.
I know that not all of these teams race each other at state.
