BTC is Jerry's program. He designed all the training. Shalane held a watch and clipboard and reported results to Jerry with perhaps some feedback about how they handled workouts. She was not really coaching anyone.

Which is the same thing that she'll do in Eugene. She's a morale-booster. No shame in that.
The positive: We need more female coaches and Shalane is a proven/qualified runner/coach.
The negative: Watching someone you like deliver Nike's crafted talking points when burrito-gate went down and then agreeing to go on the major marathon PR tour to make us forget all about it.
If this would have happened a few years ago it would have been great. There are still plenty of positives. I just hope we see more female coaches getting promoted into bigger roles.

And good for recruiting. Hopefully she will learn to be a good coach. Being a fast runner doesn't mean you can coach.

That's not completely true. I know you'd really like to believe that but Shalane has had a massive impact on that women's team.

Imagine the mental gymnastics you'd have to perform to think Shalane ran 7 marathons just for you lol

Isn't coaching college girls a lot different than coaching the pros? The pros are so talented and fast and effortless that they don't need the tweaking and problem solving that college girls need. Didn't Shalane just coach the pro girls the way she was coached? Will that work with college freshman and a far larger roster?
They all swear by Shalane and we've seen her rapport with them, and the fact that many of their best results have come with her coaching and mentoring them, so why wouldn't you think that she knows what she's doing? And what would that say about Jerry if he had hired her and brought her along to Oregon if she didn't know how to coach?

Fair?
Yes. Coaching in a college is very different than coaching pro's on every level. Coaching professionally is working with fully developed athletes who have chosen athletics to be their career. College are younger athletes who are still in a academic setting. Plus coaching in college you answer to the athletic director and then president of the school.

Schumacher and Flanagan answer only to Phil Knight.
