Just FYI, just before the start of the races, the women's and men's courses were slightly altered and shortened due to some other activity at the facility, so I wouldn't put much significance into the times. Both teams looked solid in their efforts.
Disgusted by the nepotism going on in the coaching search at NP. The woman coach was talking like she would be for sure the head coach. A serious search would allow people of color to vie for the job. It sounds like UCLA did not apply any DEI filters to its search given the speed with which Brosnan was hired. I have two words for you: Jerry Faust.
In another cool fact: The USC placekicker is an NP grad. I imagine in the pecking order at NP the football coaching staff makes a bunch more money than the XC staff.
My money is on Niwot too. Kelly Christiansan is every bit as good as Brosnan, his school is just a third of the population size. That problem is fixed with this sophomore class. He's coached his girls to a national title, and two boys to a 4 flat mile in the past 3 years. The only team with a sophomore class on the niwot level as freshmen last year was Valor Christian, but that program's falling apart.
UCLA beat UCSD in their opener in Mammoth Lakes. Times were from 9:55 to about 11:00 for the women's 3k and mid to high 11:20s and up for the men's 4k (five scorers within just a few seconds). Last year they also beat UC Riverside at the same meet but the distances were different, 4k for women (mostly from 15:35 to 16:35) and 5k for men (17s). This year's times seem a good deal better and the teams deeper. So, not a bad start for a meet like this just a month into his coaching.

Also at altitude. Note that in the picture, the course looks like Folsom Prison, where the mile world record was beaten unofficially in 1979.

?????
I’ve come around on Shawn a lot. At least he didn’t touch any of his athletes inappropriately. He’s just a running nerd and I’m mostly jealous ngl

Obviously you're trolling, but it's worth noting that Tanya Brosnan is, in fact, a woman of color.

Coronado CO is another team that can challenge for a title in 2024.
Their top 3 are sophs (went 10:30, 10:32, and 10:33 in the 2 mile at the vista race) and also a 4:33 1600 and a 4:40 1600 freshmen. The freshmen didn’t get off to a great start cause it’s their first high school race. Both made their top 7 though.
Valor Christian is also a team not to count out. They have Kaeden (9:29 in the 3200) who didn’t race and also 3 Sophs who went 10:31, 10:32 and a 10:43 in the vista 2-mile race. Also a freshman who ran a 10:12 in the 3200.
There is also a CA team Yosemite whose 4 of their top 5 are Sophs. Sophs went: 9:34 9:34 9:49 10:14 In the 2 mile They will just need one more guy. They are also a d4 school so they don’t compete against d1 and d2 schools at state, and nxn bids are dependent on the merge of results
Tanya Brosnan confirmed Leo, Lex, Aaron S., Dev Doshi, Aaron Cantu, and also transfer Brayden Seymour, and then said someone else will fight for the 7th spot. But no mention of Hector Martinez. My guess is he's either injured or transferred. Also confirmed NXN.
Looks like he did transfer. Not to mention that he wanted to be a freshman again. Guess he wanted to stay in high school longer?

UCLA's new distance running coach Sean Brosnan discusses his first month on the job after previously coaching Newbury Park High's national championship high school team.

Wait…hold on a sec! School hasn’t started yet! I think you can still change school choices can’t you? Well, I doubt he would be upset if there are 2 other sub-10:40 guys coming in
Better guys joining West Ranch (Halvorsen and Duenas). Also, will Adrian Cantu also join West Ranch next year?

You know what else could be going on?
He probably is now so out of shape that he might be on the same level as guys fighting for the 7th spot like Shetty, Porter, and Guevara
The last 2 aren’t getting that spot this year. But they have transferred in, Anyone know why?
One more decent year for the NBP team and I suspect the wheels will fall off and they'll go back to pre-Sean Brosnan years type of performance. End of an era.
I knew this was gonna happen in 2020 actually. That NP would be down in 2023. but not to the extent where they won’t make state. They just won’t go to NXN in 2023. At the first race in 2020, Doshi ran a 16:34 5K but their second freshman (Sloan) was barely under 19 minutes. I saw this as a red flag for 2023. I also remember knowing that Sloan had a class of 2026 brother Noah. but with only those 3 guys it made it look like the team was gonna be sparse in 2023
