it is not because of "historical disadvantages", the woman's distance program has not lived up to expectations. as far as the move being related to her gender how do you know the school isn't going to hire another coach that is a man? enough of this judging everything by race and gender first. oregon university used to be the school high school kids dreamed of attending, especially middle and long distance runners.
Economically? We've had unprecedented economic growth and the S&P 500 has tripled from 1400-4100 despite some major downturns that turned into quick recoverys.
Socially... I won't go into this because this is beyond stupid. Sorry you need to blame women for your crappy life.
Maybe because white males immigrated to the United States, primarily, for the first two hundred years of our existence.
Naturally white males filled the slots of working and management. Specifically, white males built American might in industry, innovation, philanthropy and… stop the presses creating organizations and opportunities for social, gender and racial equality and advancement.
since WW2 more women and people from different backgrounds have been integrating, advancing into working society and now run and own businesses.
Why would you choose the best person for a job based on gender, color, or anything else that has nothing to do with performance?
Because of the historical disadvantages of being a woman or person of color in the working world. If you’re satisfied with white men holding all the key employment positions, then leave things alone. If you’d rather see more diversity among those positions, then something needs to be done to create more opportunities for women and people of color.
Soooo.....even if you're NOT qualified for the position you deserve to leap frog over someone who has put in the time and paid their dues AND has a successful track record? All that goes out the window because your skin isn't brown and you're a man? Hmmmm...that sounds like discrimination to me.
Here's a suggestion, NO ONE CARES! WORK HARDER! If the BEST person for the job is a woman, a man, trans, black, white, brown, green, etc..... hire them...PERIOD!
Powers that be at OU want a distance heavy team filled with American recruits.
- Johnson won, but with sprinters
- Lehman-Winters did not win and could not recruit US athletes.
Lehman-Winters WOULD NOT recruit US athletes. They signed one talented homegrown Oregon girl last year for no money because the athlete's mother works at the university and enjoys a huge discount. A lot of very talented local kids would love to go to Eugene but got offers elsewhere because of her disinterest in domestic and local talent.
My sources say that it made Uncle Phil very unhappy to see talented locals going to OSU, Washington, Georgetown, Princeton, U of Portland, etc. without getting so much as a recruiting letter or a courtesy unofficial visit invitation from the old regime.
Spot on.
HLW was notorious for recruiting only foreigners at USF, the one year she dominated the team was made up of women runners from England and Germany.
How on earth could she get the job over HLM? HLM has a FEW podium finishes with two different teams. Shalane has never even trained a dog how to sit. Yet, she is qualified to be the Oregon coach over someone with the resume of HLM!? She must be a CINO (coach in name only) and will be running with the athletes Jerry recruits and coaches.
Jerry should know that top talented runners almost never make good or sustainable coaches. Can you imagine her in some 17 year old's living room trying to impress her and their parents while begging them not to attend Stanford, but to come to Oregon? hahahaha she's used to 17 year olds idolizing her and now she is going to suddenly be ok foot washing them ? I can't LOL more rn.
Look. If you are a name, you don't have to pay your dues. How is that hard to understand?
Steve Kerr was named GM of the SUns with ZERO front office experience.
Steve Kerr was named coach of Golden State with ZERO coaching experience.
And it's not just white people that his happens to. Jason Kidd was named head coach in the NBA with ZERO coaching experience.
And yes Jerry is smart enough to know why most super talented runners dont' make good coaches. But he's also smart enough to realize that Shalane may not be like most super talented runners.
People on these boards were saying for 2 years how bad the Oregon women are. Now a new coach wants to bring in his own poeple and they are outraged, he may be hiring someone he's comfortable with?
Great post!
The whole "Experience" argument is idiotic. Yeah, not every world class runner is going to be a great coach, we all know that. The key factor is how much does a "Name" coach know about the process of training and racing. How does the "Name" coach communicate with athletes both on and off the track. Anyone can lookup workouts on the internet, anyone can hold a clip board a couple years as an assistant and click a watch, the real question is can they communicate with elite athletes without going through the process themselves.
If I want to learn how to drive an F1 race car I'm picking Lewis Hamilton over the guy at the DMV who gives driving tests.
Well, liberals feel there is a quota on sex and race, regardless if the candidates are less qualified than their counterparts that might be male or caucasian (God forbid a caucasian male might be the most qualified candidate applying). You're better off being black and scoring 1300 on the SAT, then being Asian and scoring 1550. That is racism against all non black applicants. Very backwards world we are currently living in that race is a crutch for inferior applicants based on objective metrics.
This guy thinks the SAT is an objective metric.🤣🤣🤣

Just your normal LRC racist that is allowed to post for years without getting banned.
I'm a person of color. While I don't agree with Ghost of Igloi's assessment, this is not racist. She/He has an opinion that people like me have had advantages for decades in the hiring for track jobs.
People form much of their opinions based on what they have experienced. Perhaps this person had a negative experience of not getting a job that instead went to a women or person of color that they felt they should have obtained; hence their opinion,
To make a sweeping statement that women and people of color (implied all) have had advantages for decades is naive and ill-formed, but not racist. Certainly it HAS happened (and will continue to happen from time to time) just as much as the 'good ol' boy' network keeps qualified candidates from consideration.
