Heartland region is getting stronger actually. Wayzata and Stevens Point autoqualified and are so young that they will likely autoqualify again next year
MI is already in the MW Region, a girls team took 4th this year. I don't see your comment about the MW "getting weaker". They've got two girls teams that could get top 5 and 2 boys top ten and possibly top 5.
Nike loses money on nxn, it's an expense under 'event marketing' with goal to build long term relationship with high school runners. It's a Phil Knight pet project from his days as a runner, and Nike's start as a running shoe brand. Remember coach Bowerman and the waffle iron soles. Most of Nikes sales are now basketball, fitness, fashion, apparel related. When Phil dies and some basketball / finance guy is in charge, nxn will sadly be canceled.
I'm not from new york (i'm from cali) but if they have consistently been putting a team in the top 10 every year, it is fine. These preseason rankings don't mean squat. The nxn results are what matter in the end.
Even better let’s re-assess in 2028 or something. Talent fluctuates so highly, it’s impossible to judge a region off of one year or even a couple years. The fact is, Corning was a top 10 national team last year (and probably 2021 as well with the way they dominated NY), CBA is a consistent powerhouse, and both regions often have other teams that are even better. I’d be willing to bet a significant amount of money that within the next 5 years, NY and NE will have a year where they have 3-4 total teams in the top 10 on either gender, while South/SE have 0-1, and it will look like they should be combined instead.
Every region has down years, but taking away opportunities from regions that have had great success historically (even if they are weaker this year) is a big mistake.

The fair solution would be to reduce the number of automatic bids and increase the at-large bids. There will always be a couple of strong regions, even if by random chance. Southwest and California have been ridiculous for years. Some years it's extremely unfair.
Fold the South and southeast into 2 other regions. They obviously don't deserve 2 auto bids. That would free up 4 more at large bids. 8 at large would be much more fair.
