Hmmmm. There's probably a dozen threads on this, but was Lagat really "a 1:46 guy", just because that is what he ran?
Really? Jakob is a 1:46 guy because that is his current PR, in an event that he uses in early season warmups?
Come on guys. We can do better than this! :)
I feel like you won't be satisfied until someone tells you what you want hear. Jakob would be a 1:41 guy if he devoted an entire year to the 800. Happy now?
No.
What makes you think this? (I don't think he could ever be a 1:41 guy.)
One thing I love about Ingebrigtsens is their extreme generosity with regard to sharing of training details. Of course there's that 5-season show, which imho is facking wonderful. But Gjert has also shared many specifics.
I once read of Jakob doing 25x400m at 56 to 52. I imagine most were closer to 56, but maybe some were 52, and I don't know the recovery.
The training usually seems very 1500m/5000m centric. Of course - that is what Jakob focusses on.
I wonder if some shifts will take place towards his mid-20s, however. He's won Oly gold at one distance, and WC at the other. The training must shift/change as a career progresses, and new goals emerge.
Maybe there will be more 52s than 56s in the future? :) If he really wants 3:25.99, what shifts might he make?

Exactly - it's like Rudisha being a 45.5 400m guy because that's what his PB is. If he ran one when peaking for the 800 - then we would get a real idea, and I think around 44-mid to high.
Hicham never ran the 800m, he could have probably run 1:44 when he was in 1500m record shape. He closed Athens 1500m in '04 in a 1:46, even with a running start thats no worse than 1:47. No way he was only a 1:46 man, he just never raced it.
You can speculate but at the end of the day, you are what you ran.
And Bernard Lagat ran the 800 many times and he couldn't break 146 for the life of him. And he ran 326. I don't think El Guerrouj would be a whole lot faster nor would Yakob.
This type of thinking is so simplistic. El Guerrouj closed a 1500 in 1:46 whereas Ingebrigtsen ran it in a time trial, but according to you they are both 1:46 guys. El G’s official PB is actually 1:47 so I guess he is slower than Jakob!
To run 1.43.0, I think he needs around 46-mid to high 400m speed, FAT. That is doubtful.
1.43.9 is 52-52, so he would need 47-low for that.
Nick Symmonds ran his 800 PB of 1:42.95 two weeks after setting a 47.45 PB in the 400. No way Ingebrigtsen needs 46-mid speed to run 1:43.0 (but no way he runs 1:43.0 either).

Yes. I get that some times speculation goes overboard, but “you can what you ran” almost sounds like you’ve never actually run a race (or watched one for that matter).
As someone else mentioned, Sydney’s open 400 PR today is 50.07. If for some reason, she never ran another 400 in her life, would you really be the lone person suggesting that she was only capable of a time 0.61 faster than her hurdle race?
Look man if Yakob ran 146 on a freezing cold day in February in Sadnes you could say he could obviously faster. I get that some people's PRs don't reflect their current ability. But Yakob ran 147 smack dab in the middle of the season. You can't just wave your hands and subtract 2 or 3 seconds just for funsies. I've gone further down this rabbit hole than most of you and I know what I'm talking about here.
My guess is that if he ditched the high mileage threshold training and moved to be a more anaerobic/speed oriented miler he’d be a high 1:43 guy. Don’t fix it if it ain’t broke though.

Look man, Yakob ran 1:46 in his season opener two years ago and is a much better runner now, so I can say he can obviously go faster. You don’t get that some people’s PRs don’t reflect their current ability. Yakob ran 1:47 as a workout to prepare for Bislett smack dab in the middle of heavy training. You can just look at all the facts and subtract 2 or 3 seconds to get an idea of his potential. You’ve gone further up your own @ss than all of us and have no idea what you’re talking about here.
hes my god yeh. must be tough losing a coping mechanism w the "blacks are better at distance running" thing. not even relevant tho since the Kenyans and especially Ethiopians ( who are closer to Arabs) are not sub saharan africans as I suspect you are

One does have to recognize that Jakobs training moving in the higher mileage, more threshold based direction yields improvement in 1500m and especially 5000m and up, but you probably won’t improve much if at all in the 800m with that type of work. The only thing holding Jakob back from world class 800m speed is faster all out speed which he doesn’t train for.
As you said he’s surely capable of running faster than 1:46/1:47 but not much faster unless he cut down mileage and focused on developing speed and speed/anaerobic endurance.

Agreed. One thing we have to consider is that he has been training more like a 1500/5000 or even a 5000/10000 guy than a 800/1500 runner all along. Of course his speed would suffer. It's actually amazing he could run 1:46 off that.
