a A 4 or 5pm PDT start is prime time in the US eastern time zone which is the most populous time zone. Starting at 8pm PDT means 11pm EDT start (and crazy early start in much of western Europe).
Seb Coe has been quoted on Oregon Live saying Eugene will never have Worlds again. Seb Coe wants L.A. for Worlds, or an unnamed city in Florida or Texas.
I tried to make reservations at a hotel a year in advance and could find anything decent. My wife and I drove down to Eugene after flying into Portland. We read ahead of time where we could park or take the shuttle that was provided. We chose the latter and had no problems, it was run efficiently coming and going. We were only there one day for the morning session but were happy with the experience and while the stadium wasn't full (only the 3rd day and mostly qualifying heats except the woman's hammer and men's 10,000) it was an enthusiastic crowd. We had a great time.
You’re a moron. We’re you there? Did you even watch the coverage? The stands were about 85-90% filled today, and those that weren’t were sold.
If you are happy with 85% filled on one of the biggest days, good for you, but that isn't A+ material.
The meet was designed for USA TV. All the evening sessions were prime time in the East Coast.
Stadium is not designed for the summer as the backstretch is in the sun, but not sure what else you could do.
Final day was a sellout. When Worlds was given to Eugene, I told the Brits, "no matter what. I guarantee the stadium is packed and raucous. It's just a matter how many seats they can build."
At the time they were saying it would hold 30,000. It only held 15,000. That was the biggest surprise to me, but I think a lot of hard core track fans even only came for part of the meet with lodging and tickets being expensive.

I have been planning to go to this meet for years. I started planning by getting flight costs, hotel costs, but what broke me was the ticket costs. Afternoon+evening session tickets, the sheer number of days, I just couldn't do it. It was completely unaffordable for me.
Track and field has an existential challenge. What the sport thinks it is, and what it actually is, are two different things. Two very different things. There is a stark disconnect between the romantic idealism that many of i...
Visa issues and alleged malfunctioning clocks and blocks casting doubt on times including a world record, athlete names getting mixed up and distorted, inadequate or inaccurate information on athletes' flash info,
"yeah but....but sometimes the stands weren't full. but one person had a DQ....did I mention the stands weren't completely packed all day every day. we should give it a D+"
Some people love to look at life through a miserable lens. This meet was freaking awesome. World Champs are a blast and having them only every couple years makes it even more special. Can't wait for the next! Still can't believe the WR from Sydney....jeez that was something special.
You clearly were not there. I had to assist friend in wheelchair and was ALWAYS 2-3 blocks from the main entrance. We were amazed we could get so close for such a big event. Parking was NOT and issue. I a few days I rode my bike and was there even faster than driving and free bike value to safely watch bike. Access was not an issue.
