Hillarious that Galen is tainted by association, but when you hear Wejo and Rojo talk about an other american runner they are not even tained even though they were caught with drugs in their blood. Incredible stuff. They might be right with Galen but I don't hold that much creedence to their personal opinions.
Oh please why do I lower myself to interact with the likes of you? Please explain what he means when he says there is no such thing as a 28:00 2:06 guy. It is like you guys CANNOT think. Sad really. There are 2:06 guys who only run 28:00. So sad that you cannot grasp this.
If he wasn't so effing secretive most of the time, that would help. I laughed coffee through my nose when he refused to detail the pace of a recent 20 Miler. Remember when Coe would tell us exactly what his sessions / times were? He'd even have some filmed. Those were the days.
Could you share an example of this, please? I don’t mean from a retrospective documentary or article or book about training. Do you really think that before a major championship race Peter and Seb Coe shared session details of their training leading up to the event? Because I was around back then too and I certainly don’t remember that.

Before the 1984 Olympics Peter and Seb spent time with Joe Newton and the training was published
No, he can not. Even if his coach only did gray area stuff he did gray area stuff he shouldn't. Once a coach or athlete strayes even slightly over the line everyone associated with them 8ncluding all teammates are dodgy for life.
It is just like cycling. You don't just have one guy doing gray area stuff.
The fact that they spent years investigating NOP and couldn't find any dirt on Galen himself actually kind of vindicates him in my mind. Dude was examined under a microscope and they couldn't find any ban-worthy offenses.
That is the EXACT SAME EXCUSE Lance Armstrong used for years.
Galen will forever be connected to Dirty Alberti Salazar. They sought each other out when Galen was in middle school. Dirty Alberti coached Galen since HIGH SCHOOL, his initial pro career, controlled his collegiate workouts, then coached his subsequent pro career until Dirty Alberti’s banishment from track and field!
I'm surprised by Wejo's comment that Rupp is the best American distance runner since Pre. Pre falls well below Rupp and many others since then (Lagat, Centro, Shorter, Chelimo, etc.). No global medals should disqualify him from being in the discussion with the rest of that group.
Galen is tainted by association. As Weldon alludes to in the NYT article, people have every right to be skeptical. Galen was running unbelievably well under a coach who was banned for doping violations. Galen is no longer a great runner. Galen is like a 28:00 2:06 guy now which is not all that great in the super shoe era. Galen cannot compete for medals anymore.
There’s no such thing as a 28:00/2:06 guy.
Yes there are. Those times aren’t that incongruous. Not perfectly in sync, but not totally out of wack.
I’d submit the 10,000 record of 26:11 is a better record than 2:01:39.
I just made up this chart, but nothing in it looks totally ridiculous.
No. And it's time for the USA to develop a team of marathoners organized under one coaching team to race for success. Galen is on the down side of his career.
Rupp can never outrun Salazar’s shadow. Salazar coached him during the prime of his career and he’s had almost all of his success under his guidance. Same with Farah and to a lesser extent Ritz…and frankly anyone else that was coached by him. The Gouchers are in there as well. I’m not sure anyone will ever know if Rupp and others were doping, so I expect those accusations to follow him for the rest of his life.

26:10 = 2:00:30
26:20 = 2:01:00
26:30 = 2:01:30
26:40 = 2:02:00
26:50 = 2:02:30
27:00 = 2:03:00
27:10 = 2:03:30
27:20 = 2:04:00
27:30 = 2:04:30
27:40 = 2:05:00
27:50 = 2:05:30
28:00 = 2:06:00
Thank your for this post. Of course there are so many combinations which can go together but your post is interesting. It also makes one wonder what Galen could have run for the marathon in his absolute prime. Or Kenenisa for that matter.

Yes, but as the marathon is 4.2 times as long as the 10,000, 10 seconds over 10,000 should account for more than 42 seconds in the marathon, not just 30 seconds.

Sure. Most 28:00 guys cannot run 2:06 of course. Probably about 1 in 50 of them. Or maybe a higher % of Japanese can. But a small % overall. I am not sure if the super shoes have any bearing on this issue but your overall point is well taken.
