She did close a 14:26 5k in 61.0 in Oslo in the pouring rain 1 month ago, putting 4-5+ seconds on Grovdal/Monson/Ayana, but it was easy to miss because she was only 3rd to Seyaum and Tsegay. People here were deriding her for leaving it to the last lap, but in hindsight it may have been good practice and a sign she was working on her finish.
I don't agree. She had to time her effort perfectly by reacting to the others because she had the lead and so she had to watch how they were timing their final kick.
All this "don't look behind you" stuff that people repeat ignores the fact that you can get outkicked simply by not being more aware of a very late charge from behind.
F off. If that’s all you can say about an all-time great sprint finish, literally F off.
lol an "all-time great sprint finish" is when an athlete stays in their lane and blows away the competition.
Gidey was flailing, looking around, throwing elbows, and drifting. Absolutely DQ worthy. Cowardly, cheap running.
It looks unintentional to me, however for your information athletics its not only about technique its also about tactics plus Obiri is an experienced athlete she should do better than that but she cant. Am hopping that you must be New to Track Athletics. If I wear you I would be happy for this girl handwork just like the TV commentator said, so give it up its finished its done.
she deserved that win. Looks like she worked hard after losing out twice in the last 2 world title races. But when I think about what Almaz did in 2016 I wonder … Wow. One last point. I wonder if she was saving herself for the 5000 and wanted minimum effort knowing that all the others in the race were somewhat beatable in a dust up? Her race in Oslo definitely showed me that she had worked on her finish.
Btw…What is with gideys face scars. Anyone know. Looks cool.
When you watch the replay, you can tell Gidey actually slows once she starts panicking about Obiri. If she had just kept her eyes on the line and run hard, confidently, without looking around and drifting, she would have won cleanly anyway.

You don't "time" anything in the last 50m. You should be at 100%, period.
Where do you look up split times? And how does Gidey’s final split compare to Hassan’s in her Tokyo’20 10K gold? Am trying to get a sense of whether Gidey’s been improving her kick.
The Tokyo 10k was in MUCH hotter, worse conditions; completed by Sifan after a sh*tload of other races; faster pace prior to going into the final lap; AND Sifan didn't kick 'til 200 meters out--and did the last 100 in an absurd 12.7 (I think)! No comparison. Gidey would have had to run, like, 57 or 58 at the slowest to be equally impressive.

After thinking about it: No slower than 58.0 to indicate she would have had a CHANCE to beat the 2021 version of Sifan

Hassan’s last 100 split at Tokyo was 13.5, not 12.7. Gidey’s split yesterday was 14.6.

Gidey kept looking behind her so she could see when she needed to move to lane 2 to block Obiri. Gidey should have been DQ'd for doing that.

Except the rules don’t prevent that often employed tactic. See the WA rule book link posted above.

Protest too much there barry? It was clearly a move to block and affected the outcome. Obiri didnt like it so who cares if you do. We seem to have come to a collective decision that physically blocking a competitor is "just racing". If we are all Ok with that then fine...but let be consistent from now on, you can step in front of anyone to block them. This would be easy d/q in cycling. This so easy to police.
My zapruder film shows Gidey starting to actually extend her elbow to block her too! Look at it again. She moves over in a panic, and starts to literally stick her arm out but stops.
Letesenbet Gidey held off 10K Olympic champion Sifan Hassan and 10K legend Hellen Obiri in a wild final 400 meters to decide the women's 10,000 world champio...
Thanks, looks like Gidey’s 60.81 final lap split today was faster than Hassan’s 61.42 at Tokyo last year and much faster than her own 68.02 in that same race, so Gidey has definitely worked on her kick in the last year (irrespective of Hassan’s sub-peak form).
How do you "work on your kick", so as to gain 8 secs in a lap? Oh, right - the usual way...
Ethiopia has as much testing as Jamaica. They don't much bother with it there, either. We see that women athletes are great responders. A fine tradition since at least the days of Kratochvilova.
