I am not a fan of LHG and never was. Nor did I dislike her. What I dislike is that the prevalence of PEDs makes it hard to accept sterling performances as genuine sterling performances. I don't know whether I should be awed or disgusted at Bekele, Bolt, Albert Pujols and countless others. I don't want to feel like a dupe by becoming a fan of a particular athlete and later find out that the athlete was a fraud.
But I also miss the excitement and appreciation that came when I learned that John Walker ran a sub 3:50 mile or when Roger Maris hit more home runs in a season than anyone else had done.
I have, as I said before, little sympathy for the treatment LHG is getting now. It's self-inflicted and no matter how nasty people are to her that nastiness will not undue the damage to the sport that people like her have inflicted. But if some sixty year old guy cranks out a sub 32:00 10k next month I am not going to start accusing him of doping simply because he dropped a mind blowing performance on us.
