Below I put my responses to the OP in italics.
Jerry Schumacher is a bad fit in many ways to be the head coach of a college team.
A. He doesn't like dealing with the media.
1) There is no media left. 2) Jerry is actually good at it and funny / personable when he does talk.
B. He is used to managing a small team, not a big team.
He won't actually be coaching the javelin throwers. He'l have assistants and delegate.
C. He is used to dealing with mature adults, not incoming teenage freshman.
He just raised 3-4 kids - the youngest of which is like a HS junior. I'm sure he's fine with teenagers.
D. He is used to having his runners peak for just a few races a year, not having to run 15 or 20 races per year like college kids have to do.
Oregon isn't even in an indoor conference meet. Distance runners only need to compete a few times indoors
E. He often sets up time trial races for his pros which will be much more difficult to do for his college runners.
What do you think Mt. Sac /Stanford are? They are time trials. The only time he's really done time trials has been during Covid or AR attempts. Covid is over.
F. He specializes in the 5k/10k which is only a small part of a college team.
Jerry is a former 3:39 1500 guy himself. He could always keep on a mid-d coach like Ben Thomas
G.. He doesn't really have to recruit for Bowerman. Plenty of top 5k and 10k runners want to go there because there are very few other great 5k/10k pro groups in the US. Recruiting high school kids will be more difficult and more time consuming.
Lots of HSers want to go to Oregon. Lots of Ivy grads want to do a 5th year there. Cooper Teare begged his way on to the team.
H. Running a college team and a pro team simultaneously won't work out well.
Mike Smith has been coaching Galen Rupp and NAU quite well. Mark Wetmore has coached Jenny Simpson and CU quite well.
J. Oregon is getting rid of a fat shamer and replacing him with a guy who supports (and apparently still coaches) a convicted drug user.
Even if this is true, it can be a teaching moment. We all make mistakes. I'll be there if you come up short as often times only you know what really happened.
