I'm not trying to imply she did something sinister. I used the term cheater shoes as that's what I call them.
Do people not understand half my job is making a boring sport entertaining?
Anyways, I saw this on facebook from Becca Gillespy Peter
Historically, triple jump spikes have been pretty common in the long jump and pole vault. Last December, World Athletics added some restrictions to the thickness of the sole of the shoe that made at least some TJ spikes illegal for other events. I'm not sure how well this is known or has been enforced. I really doubt Rojas would have worn "illegal" spikes if she had known!
Can we just discuss for a second how rediculous the rule is. Could you imagine if the 100m and 200m had different equipment restrictions, or if the 5,000m and 10,000m did? This is insane. So people who do both events need two pairs at compeitions now. What about people in decathlons who do pole vault and LJ, the new rule makes many pole vault shoes illegal in the long jump as well! This is crazy.
Good point about the decathlon. Ayone know if decathletes now need an extra pair of shoes? I used to use the same pair of shoes for the long jump, pole vault and high jump.
Track and field’s governing body World Athletics said Wednesday that a jump by Rojas in Spain in June — which was long enough to qualify for the worlds — “was not a valid result as she was wearing triple jump shoes which are not approved for long jump.”
The soles of long jump shoes are allowed a maximum thickness of 20 millimeters, while the limit for triple jump is 25 millimeters.
Sort of an inflammatory post, calling them “cheater” shoes. Any indication she or her coach was aware these shoes are not allowed in the LJ? Was she aware and just got confused? She must be very comfortable in those shoes. Anyway, the implication that the TJ goat cheated on purpose should be made with great caution.
Wise words, but keep in mind that you're addressing the person who delivered this news item in a recent podcast:
"...Christian Coleman ran well [in the NYC Grand Prix], first sub-10 since his drug ban...."
It's unclear what, if anything, is being implied here, but the phrasing "his drug ban" could prompt someone unfamiliar with his case to believe a failed drug test was at issue. Whether or not "his drug ban" and "cheater shoes" are acceptable journalistic shorthand, I couldn't say, but I would accept JG's counsel on the matter.

Missing tests is the same as receiving a positive drug test. Anti doping rules clearly state this.
If you knew you were doping, and all you had to do was miss tests and get a lighter punishment and nobody could call you a drug cheat, then that's what everyone would do. Missing drug tests = positive drug test.
I would love to hear why anyone would think a 5mm cushion would increase your long jump distance? If this is the case then we need to ban heel cups as well. I am sure Rojas was comfortable jumping in her TJ shoes since she has been doing it for years.
TJ shoes are heavier than LJ shoes so I would think it is more of a disadvantage.
Indeed! Why in the world are different shoes allowed for long jump vs triple jump? That's crazy!
And while I'm no expert on the two events, I did both in high school so I have some knowledge of them. They are just not that different. It should be possible to have a single set of rules with regard to shoes.

Because of the impact that you have multiple times on TJ. The TJ shoes are built to absorb that contact. That is why this is stupid to consider it an advantage.
