The Fosbery Flounce
Think ya might have something there, what did she do before BOOM there she was?
Yep, nobody saw where he was going.
Thanks for the compliment, appreciate it. I want those guns gone and will be getting my wish soon.
She was world junior champion in the 10,000 a year before her spectacular year so maybe not really BOOM there she was.
I;d never heard of Kenteris, talk about a......who?......there it was.
Jacobs is a good one he did next to nothing before his Olympic gold.
Gotta DQ her, sorry, ha~~~
But but.....
Kenteris and Jacobs were members of Olympic teams so they didn't just come out of nowhere in Greece and Italy. Nobody had ever heard of Maurice Greene at all.
Who remembers sprinter J.J.Johnson who had this thing about 4x1 anchoring? Cat was out of Panhandle JC....huh?
Billy Mills. He was known to a small extent but only by college track fans. He certainly wasn't expected to win Olympic gold beating the world record holder Ron Clarke and America's best Gerry Lindgren. And in such dramatic fashion. One of the best calls in the history of sports, right up there with "Do you believe in miracles???"
No contest--Delano Meriwether
What is wrong with that is while he did shock at the Olympics he was an Olympians hardly an out of nowhere.

Very familiar with his story, but before he ever really stunned us he was running and well known. Mo Greene beat Carl Lewis as his introduction.
Great story, how he was just flicking tv stations came to a track meet and thought.......I can beat those guys, ha!! gotta love it.

Beat me to it.
For me it was Maggie Vesey at the 2009 Pre Classic. She was unsponsored and stood out in her ordinary shirt and shorts. She was several seconds off the back of the pack at 400 and never came into the picture until the final 100. as she crossed the finish line she was as stunned as anyone that she pulled it off. She went on to have a few solid years as a mainstay of American 800m runners
How about Butch Reynolds? His 44.10 at the Jesse Owens Classic in 1987 broke the low altitude world record. I had never heard of him before that.

Marcell Jacobs of Italy
He never broke 10 before the 2021 Olympics.
I never heard of him before the Games.
I don’t think anyone here ever heard of him or certainly didn’t mention him.He runs 9.80 and wins the Olympic 100m Gold.
Idk if he is a good example-- well, maybe for someone who doesn't follow the sport.
Jacobs was a well known long jumper (8.48 wind aided in 2016) and youth phenom.
But he spent years injured. After switching to 100 in 2019 he ended with a 10.03 to his name in his first year training for the distance.

Am I living in the twilight zone? The Boston Marathon weather was terrible!
How rare is it to run a sub 5 minute mile AND bench press 225?
Move over Mark Coogan, Rojo and John Kellogg share their 3 favorite mile workouts
Mark Coogan says that if you could only do 3 workouts as a 1500m runner you should do these
